Frequently Asked Questions About Planning a Trip to Europe
Quick answers — and I’m happy to walk through anything on a call.
Should I do a guided tour or plan my Europe trip independently?
It depends on your comfort level and how much structure you want. Guided tours (like Trafalgar or Globus) handle logistics and include a tour director—great for first-time European travelers. Independent trips give you more flexibility but require more coordination. Many of my clients do a mix: a guided week in Italy plus a few independent days in Paris.
How many days do I need for a Europe trip?
Most clients spend 10–14 days, which allows for 3–4 destinations without feeling rushed.
Do you book flights for European trips?
I help coordinate your flights, and I book trains, hotels, tours — the complete trip. Here's why families are choosing advisors in 2026.

More questions
Here are a few additional details that come up often.
Should I take a guided tour or plan independently?
It depends on your travel style. Guided tours are ideal for first-time European visitors, people who want everything handled, and anyone who values having a knowledgeable local guide. Independent travel offers more flexibility and spontaneity but requires more planning and comfort navigating on your own. Many of my clients do a combination—a guided tour for part of the trip and independent days in a city they want to explore at their own pace. I’ll help you find the right balance. I break down the full comparison in my guided vs. independent Europe trip guide.
How many days do I need for a European vacation?
I generally recommend a minimum of seven to ten days for a meaningful European trip, though two weeks or more is ideal if your schedule allows. Trying to see too many countries in too few days leads to exhaustion, not enjoyment. I’ll help you build an itinerary that covers your must-see destinations without overpacking the schedule. A European river cruise is another great way to see multiple cities with minimal planning.
Is Europe good for families with kids?
Absolutely. I plan family European trips regularly, and the key is choosing destinations and pacing that work for your kids’ ages. Italy is a perennial favorite for families (kids love pizza, gelato, and the Colosseum). London is wonderfully family-friendly. I’ll build an itinerary that keeps the whole family engaged without wearing anyone out. My first trip to Europe guide for Midwest families covers passports, packing, jet lag, and what to actually expect.
How far in advance should I book a European trip?
For guided tours, booking six to nine months ahead gives you the best selection of dates and room types. For independent travel, I recommend starting the planning process at least four to six months out, especially if you’re traveling during peak summer months when hotels and popular attractions book up.
