Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) now offers three ways to skip O'Hare: nonstop international charter packages to Cancún, Punta Cana, and Huatulco; year-round Allegiant domestic routes to Florida, Las Vegas, and Nashville; and a new American Airlines + Landline service that opens the entire AA global network without driving to O'Hare yourself.
Ask most Rockford residents about Chicago Rockford International Airport and you'll get one of two reactions: "Oh, that's the cargo airport" or "Wait, we have an airport?" Both are fair. RFD has built its reputation as one of the busiest cargo hubs in the Midwest. It's not exactly known for passengers.
But here's what most people don't know: every year, thousands of Rockford-area families skip the miserable drive to O'Hare and fly directly from RFD to popular beach destinations — nonstop. No connections. No two-hour security lines. No $25-a-day parking. Just a 15-minute drive from your house to a plane headed straight to paradise.
And as of October 2025, there's a third option nobody's talking about yet — one that opens up the entire American Airlines global network, and you still never have to drive to O'Hare yourself.
Should You Fly from RFD? (Quick Guide)
There are now three ways to use RFD. Here's the short version:
| Your situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Going to Cancún, Punta Cana, or Huatulco this winter/spring | RFD charter (Apple Vacations/GlobalX) |
| Want a Florida beach, Vegas, or Nashville without the planning | Allegiant from RFD — direct, year-round |
| Need Europe, Hawaii, or any destination not on the above lists | American Airlines + Landline from RFD |
| Truly need full airline flexibility with points/miles/dates | O'Hare — and even then, read the Landline section first |
As a Rockford-area travel advisor, I run this comparison for every client before recommending anything. Sometimes RFD wins decisively. Sometimes O'Hare makes more sense. And sometimes the right answer is a combination. Let's break down all three options.
Where Can You Fly Direct from Rockford?
Option 1: Nonstop International Charter Packages — Apple Vacations / GlobalX Airlines
This is the one most Rockford families don't know exists — and it's the best-kept travel secret in the 815. Several times a week from January through early April, nonstop charter flights leave RFD for Cancún, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and Huatulco on Mexico's Pacific coast. These flights are operated by GlobalX Airlines through Apple Vacations' Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flight program. Three and a half hours after takeoff, you're at your all-inclusive resort. No layover in Dallas. No 3:30 a.m. alarm to beat O'Hare traffic. No $175 parking bill waiting when you get home.
| Destination | Days | Season Window | Flight Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancún, Mexico | Mon / Wed / Sat | Jan 24 – Apr 1, 2026 | ~3.5 hours |
| Punta Cana, Dominican Republic | Thu / Sun | Jan 25 – Mar 29, 2026 | ~4 hours |
| Huatulco, Mexico | Friday | Jan 23 – Mar 27, 2026 | ~4.5 hours |
Huatulco is new this season and genuinely worth considering. It's less crowded than Cancún, the resorts are excellent, and it tends to have more availability for spring break dates when everything else is sold out. If you haven't heard of it before, that's exactly why I'm mentioning it.

Option 2: Allegiant Air — Year-Round Direct Flights from RFD
This one doesn't get enough credit, even from Stateline-area travelers who've heard of RFD. Allegiant Air operates scheduled (not charter) flights from RFD year-round to domestic destinations. These are real airline tickets — book when you want, travel when you want, no hotel bundling required.
| Destination | Notes |
|---|---|
| Las Vegas, NV | Year-round, ~4 hrs |
| Phoenix/Mesa, AZ | Year-round, ~3.5 hrs |
| Nashville, TN | Year-round, ~1.5 hrs |
| Orlando/Sanford, FL | Year-round, ~2.5 hrs |
| St. Petersburg/Clearwater, FL | Seasonal |
| Sarasota, FL | Seasonal |
| Punta Gorda, FL | Year-round |
| Fort Lauderdale, FL | Seasonal |
If you want a long weekend in Vegas, a winter week in Florida, or a quick trip to Nashville — and you don't want to deal with O'Hare — Allegiant from RFD is a completely separate option from the charter program. Same small airport. Same easy parking. No bundled hotel unless you want one. Allegiant books on allegiantair.com.
Option 3: American Airlines + Landline — The Full Global Network from RFD
This one launched in October 2025, and most Greater Rockford area residents still haven't heard about it.
Here's the short version: you can now check in and clear TSA security at RFD, then board a premium motorcoach that takes you directly to O'Hare — where you connect to more than 350 American Airlines destinations worldwide. Europe. Hawaii. Asia. Any American hub. All of it, without driving yourself to O'Hare.
How it works:
- Book on aa.com or the American Airlines app, just like any other American itinerary. Enter RFD as your origin.
- Show up at RFD, check your bags, clear TSA. Here — not at O'Hare.
- Board the Landline motorcoach (leather seats, Wi-Fi, power outlets, entertainment included). The ride takes about 1 hour 35 minutes.
- Arrive airside at O'Hare — you go straight to your American gate. No re-clearing security. Your checked bags transfer automatically.
- On the return, deplane at O'Hare and walk to the Landline gate. Your bags are already on the coach. You're home in 15 minutes after the ride.
- Five daily departures in each direction. Earn AAdvantage miles on every trip.
The price is generally comparable to booking the same American itinerary departing from O'Hare — sometimes identical. But RFD parking runs $8/day booked in advance vs. $16–$30/day at O'Hare's economy lot. And you're not adding 90 minutes of driving each way to your travel day.
The Landline service is useful if you need to get to London, Tokyo, Honolulu, or anywhere else in American's network — and you'd rather start your trip from RFD than fight O'Hare traffic at 4 a.m. It's also useful if you're a frequent traveler who relies on AAdvantage status. You're earning miles on the motorcoach leg, same as any other flight segment.
How Charter Flights from RFD Work
Charter flights aren't sold like regular airline tickets. Here's what makes them different — and why it's usually an advantage, not a drawback.
- The flight and hotel are bundled. You're not booking just a seat — you're booking the whole vacation in one transaction. Round-trip nonstop flight + resort + airport transfers, one price, one booking.
- Package pricing is often better than DIY. Charter operators have negotiated bulk rates with resorts. You frequently end up paying less than if you booked the same flight and hotel separately.
- Fixed departure dates. You're working around the schedule, not setting your own. For most Rockford families whose vacation window is already locked in by school calendars, this is rarely a problem. But if you need a specific date that doesn't line up with the charter calendar, you'll look at another option.
- Flexible trip lengths. Apple Vacations offers stays of 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 14 nights from RFD — so it's not as rigid as people assume.
- Charter schedules can shift. Infrequently, but it happens. When you book through me, I'm watching your booking. You hear about changes immediately, not the week before you leave.
What RFD Charter Packages Actually Cost
These are approximate ranges based on recent RFD seasons. Prices include round-trip charter airfare and all-inclusive resort stay.
| Destination | Budget (per person, 7 nights) | Mid-Range | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancún | $800–$1,100 | $1,100–$1,600 | $1,600–$2,500+ |
| Punta Cana | $750–$1,000 | $1,000–$1,400 | $1,400–$2,200+ |
| Huatulco | $850–$1,150 | $1,150–$1,700 | $1,700–$2,500+ |
For a family of four, a week in Cancún at a solid mid-range all-inclusive — flights included — runs roughly $4,400 to $6,400. That's competitive with, and often cheaper than, the same trip pieced together through O'Hare.
Same Trip, Two Airports: A Real-World Example
A family of four, one week in Cancún, February school break:
| Flying from RFD (charter) | Flying from O'Hare (DIY) | |
|---|---|---|
| Wake-up time | 5:45 a.m. | 3:30 a.m. |
| Drive to airport | 15 minutes | 75–90+ minutes |
| Parking (7 days) | $0–$50 | $100–$175+ |
| Security wait | 10–15 minutes | 30–60+ minutes |
| Door to gate | ~45 minutes | 2.5–3.5 hours |
| Flight to Cancún | ~3.5 hrs, nonstop | ~3.5–4 hrs (if nonstop available) |
| Vacation time gained | +4 to 6 hours round-trip | Baseline |
| Approximate total cost | ~$5,400 (incl. transfers) | ~$4,860 (no transfers) |
In this example, RFD runs about $540 more — roughly $135 per person. But it includes airport transfers (the O'Hare version doesn't), buys back 4–6 hours of actual vacation time round-trip, and means your kids are in bed by 9 p.m. on departure night instead of getting dragged out the door at 3 a.m. For many families, that math is easy. For others, the $540 tips the other direction. That's exactly the conversation I have with every client before recommending which way to go.
Who RFD Charters Are Perfect For
- Families with young kids. RFD's small terminal means short walks, fast security, and none of the sensory chaos of a major hub. Departure day with a 5-year-old from RFD is a completely different experience than 4 a.m. at O'Hare with a stroller, a car seat, and a meltdown in the security line.
- First-time international travelers. The charter package structure removes a lot of complexity: flights, resort, and transfers are bundled. You're not managing three separate bookings across three platforms.
- Anyone who dreads O'Hare. If the thought of driving to O'Hare at 4 a.m., paying $175 for parking, and navigating a packed terminal is the reason you haven't taken a vacation lately — RFD solves that. For all three reasons.
- All-inclusive resort travelers. Charter packages are purpose-built for this. The pricing is competitive and the whole trip comes together in one booking.
- Groups. When 15–25 people are traveling together, getting everyone to the same departure from the same local airport is dramatically easier than coordinating from O'Hare or Midway.
What It's Actually Like Flying from RFD
Getting there: RFD is on the south side of Rockford, right off Route 20. From most Rockford neighborhoods: 10 to 20 minutes. From Loves Park, Machesney Park, or Belvidere: similarly quick. Even from Byron, Oregon, or Freeport — or across the Stateline in South Beloit or Beloit, Wisconsin — you're rarely looking at more than 30 to 40 minutes. Compare that to O'Hare: 75 to 90 minutes on a good day. Two hours during rush hour.
Parking: Lots are close to the terminal, the walk is short. For Allegiant and the Landline service, parking runs $8/day booked in advance, $9 drive-up, or $12 valet. Some charter packages include parking entirely. At O'Hare, a week in the economy lot runs $100 to $150+.
The terminal: Small — and that's the whole point. No maze of concourses. No trams. No 20-minute walks to your gate. Security lines are typically under 15 minutes. For families with young children, elderly travelers, or anyone who finds major airports stressful, the RFD experience is a different world.
Coming home: Equally painless. Your charter or Allegiant flight lands at RFD, you go through customs (for international) or walk straight out (domestic), collect your luggage, and walk to your car. Touchdown to pulling out of the lot: 30 to 45 minutes. After a week at the beach, that matters.
When to Book: The RFD Charter Calendar
Charter inventory for the upcoming season typically releases in late summer or early fall. The 2026 season opened in January. At this point in March, the best spring break dates are already thin — but there's still availability if you move quickly.
- Presidents' Day, spring break weeks: Book 6–9 months out. Many of the best dates are gone by October.
- January and February travel: More flexibility, but popular resorts still book early.
- Want first pick next season? Let me know now. I'll flag you the day 2026–27 inventory opens.
What to Know Before Booking a Charter Flight
This is worth saying clearly: charter bookings have stricter cancellation policies than commercial airline tickets. Deposits are typically non-refundable from day one. Change fees apply — usually $50–$150 per person depending on timing. And if something goes wrong close to departure, there may not be another flight for several days.
A good travel insurance policy covers trip cancellation for documented reasons, trip interruption, and medical expenses abroad. Buy it within 14–21 days of your first deposit to make sure you're covered for pre-existing conditions. I walk every charter client through the specific policies for their booking before anything is finalized. No surprises.
Best Booking Strategy for RFD Charters
For charter packages: Book early, especially for peak dates. Christmas week, Presidents' Day, and spring break fill first. Six to nine months out is the right window. Be flexible on the resort, not the destination — if you're locked on one specific property, your date options narrow. I always compare RFD to O'Hare before committing; for the right dates and destination, RFD charter usually wins on value and convenience, but occasionally a promotional commercial fare from O'Hare closes the gap.
For Allegiant: Book directly on allegiantair.com. Allegiant runs frequent fare sales — signing up for email alerts is worth it if you're flexible on travel dates. Their best prices often surface with 2–4 months of lead time.
For Landline / American Airlines: Book on aa.com or the American app, entering RFD as your origin. Fares are generally comparable to O'Hare. If you're loyal to American, this is an easy upgrade to your routine — same miles, same status, much better parking and security experience.
RFD vs. O'Hare: The Complete Comparison
| Factor | Fly from RFD | Drive to O'Hare |
|---|---|---|
| Drive time from Rockford | 15–20 minutes | 75–90+ minutes |
| Parking (7 days) | $0–$56 advance ($8/day) | $112–$175+ economy |
| Security line | Under 15 minutes | 30–60+ minutes |
| Terminal experience | Small, calm, walkable | Large, crowded, stressful |
| Charter options | Cancún, Punta Cana, Huatulco (winter/spring) | None |
| Domestic options | Allegiant to FL, Vegas, Nashville, AZ | All major airlines |
| International options | Charters + Landline to full AA network | All major airlines |
| Wake-up time (7 a.m. international flight) | 5:45 a.m. | 3:30 a.m. |
| Coming home | 30–45 min to car | 90+ min to car + drive |
Travel Documents You'll Need
International travel (charters, Landline international connections): A passport book is required — a passport card won't work for international air travel. Make sure it's valid well beyond your travel dates. Many destinations require at least six months of remaining validity past your return date. As of early 2026, routine processing takes 4 to 6 weeks; expedited runs 2 to 3 weeks — and that doesn't include mailing time, which can add up to two weeks each way. Every traveler needs their own passport, including infants. Child passports are valid for five years, and both parents must be present at the application appointment.
Don't have a passport yet and your trip is soon? There are still incredible options that don't require one: Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico. I can help you plan around your situation.
Domestic travel (Allegiant): You'll need a valid government-issued ID. Illinois is REAL ID compliant, so a standard Illinois driver's license works — but if yours isn't REAL ID compliant (look for the star in the upper right corner), bring your passport instead.
What If Your Plans Change?
Charter bookings have stricter cancellation policies than regular airline tickets. Deposits are typically non-refundable from day one, and change fees apply — usually $50–$150 per person. Travel insurance is not optional here. Buy it within 14–21 days of your first deposit to get the broadest coverage. I walk every charter client through this before anything is finalized.
Beyond RFD: When O'Hare Makes More Sense
I'm not here to steer everyone toward RFD regardless of what fits. Sometimes O'Hare is genuinely the right call:
- You need a destination with no RFD service. Europe, Asia, Alaska, cruise ports like Galveston — these require O'Hare, with or without Landline.
- You're traveling in summer. The charter program runs winter through early spring. Summer travel means Allegiant domestic routes or O'Hare for international.
- You're using points and miles on a specific partner airline. Not all airlines are booked through RFD. If you need to use United miles for a specific itinerary, you're probably starting at O'Hare.
- Your specific dates don't line up with charter departures. The charter calendar is fixed. If your dates don't match, they don't match — and I'll tell you that upfront rather than trying to talk you into something that doesn't work.
The goal isn't RFD for its own sake. The goal is the right trip for your family. Sometimes that starts in Rockford. Sometimes it starts at O'Hare. I'll always tell you which one makes more sense for your specific trip.
From Rockford to the Caribbean: Closer Than You Think
There's a psychological distance between Rockford and a Caribbean beach that's much bigger than the physical distance. When you're scraping ice off your windshield on a gray February morning on East State Street, Cancún feels like it might as well be on the moon.
But it's not. It's three and a half hours away. That's less time than driving to Indianapolis. Less time than a long afternoon at CherryVale Mall with a teenager. Less time than the I-90 drive to O'Hare on a bad traffic day.
And thanks to Allegiant's year-round domestic routes and the new American Airlines + Landline service, RFD now connects Northern Illinois travelers to nearly the entire world — not just beach resorts in winter. You don't have to drive to O'Hare. You probably shouldn't.
