Universal Orlando Is More Complicated Than It Looks — Especially Now
With Epic Universe now open, Universal has gone from a 2-day park to a potential 4–5 day destination. Express Pass decisions, hotel benefit optimization, and navigating three distinct park experiences require more planning than most families expect going in.
Guessing It
- Paying for Express Pass when you don't need it — or not buying it when you do
- Staying off-site and missing free Express Pass included with on-site hotels
- Not knowing how Epic Universe compares to the original parks
- Splitting time poorly between parks and missing the highlights

From families I've helped plan Universal Orlando trips.
She knew Universal as well as she knows Disney — I was impressed.
We did Universal instead of Disney this time, and Bonnie knew it just as well. She told us exactly which hotel to pick for the free Express Pass and mapped out our park days so we hit everything without rushing.
Epic Universe added so much — Bonnie helped us figure out how many days we really needed.
We almost booked 2 days like we always had. Bonnie explained what Epic Universe added and why we needed at least 4. She was completely right.
Frequently Asked Questions About Universal Orlando Planning
Quick answers — and I’m happy to walk through anything on a call.
What is Epic Universe and when did it open?
Epic Universe is Universal's newest theme park, which opened in 2025. It features five distinct worlds including the Ministry of Magic (Harry Potter), How to Train Your Dragon, and Classic Monsters. It's a full-day park that requires separate admission, and it significantly changes how many days a Universal Orlando trip needs to be.
Do I need Express Pass at Universal Orlando?
It depends on your travel dates and tolerance for lines. On busy days (spring break, summer, holidays), Express Pass can cut wait times dramatically. On slower days, early arrival and strategic routing can work just as well. I'll give you a specific recommendation based on your dates — and whether staying on-site makes the Express Pass decision easier.
Which on-site Universal hotels include free Express Pass?
The Hard Rock Hotel, Portofino Bay Hotel, and Royal Pacific Resort (the Premier and Preferred tier hotels) include unlimited Express Pass for all registered guests. The lower-tier on-site hotels don't include it. I'll help you decide whether the hotel upgrade pays for itself based on your group size and travel dates.
How many days do I need at Universal Orlando with Epic Universe?
With Epic Universe, most families need 4–5 days to cover all three parks without feeling rushed. Two days is no longer adequate for a thorough Universal experience. I'll build a day allocation based on your group's interests and which parks and rides matter most to you.

More questions
Here are a few additional details that come up often.
Can I do Disney and Universal in the same trip?
Yes — combining Disney and Universal in one trip is very common for Midwest families. Most families do Disney first (more booking windows and prep required), then Universal. The typical split is 4–5 days Disney, 3–4 days Universal. I'll help you figure out the right allocation based on your group's priorities.
Is Universal Orlando good for young children?
Universal has a strong lineup for young children — especially in the Wizarding World and the newer kids' areas. Epic Universe adds more family-friendly content. Some of the most popular rides (Velocicoaster, Jurassic World Coaster) have height requirements that exclude younger kids, but there's plenty for families with children of any age. I'll flag height requirements for your group before arrival.
