Alaska Cruise Decisions Have More Consequences Than Most
Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska routing produces completely different port experiences. Excursions book out months ahead of peak season sailings. And the cruisetour decision — whether to add Denali before or after — changes how you plan flights, timing, and budget.

- Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska — not clear on the difference
- Booking a glacier excursion the week before sailing and finding it sold out
- Choosing the wrong cabin deck for Alaska's scenic cruising
- Not knowing whether a cruisetour is worth the extra time and cost
Working With an Alaska Cruise Advisor
- Inside Passage vs. Gulf routing recommendation based on your priorities
- Excursions booked early — before the best options sell out
- Cabin deck and balcony guidance for maximum scenery

From clients I've helped plan Alaska cruise vacations.
She knew the difference between Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska better than any website.
We were ready to book Gulf of Alaska. One conversation with Bonnie and we understood why Inside Passage was right for what we actually wanted. Completely different trips.
She got us a glacier excursion I couldn't find available anywhere.
Every helicopter glacier tour I looked at was sold out. Bonnie found one, booked it, and it was the single best experience of the whole trip.
Frequently Asked Questions About Alaska Cruise Planning
Quick answers — and I’m happy to walk through anything on a call.
What's the difference between an Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska cruise?
Inside Passage cruises are typically round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver, sailing through the protected waters of the Inside Passage — fjords, islands, and glaciers, with calmer seas. Gulf of Alaska cruises are one-way (Vancouver to Seward/Anchorage or reverse), sailing open ocean and covering different glaciers and ports. Inside Passage is the more popular choice for first-time Alaska cruisers; Gulf of Alaska is better for those who want a one-way journey and are adding a Denali cruisetour.
Which cruise line is best for Alaska?
Holland America and Princess are the most Alaska-focused lines — they have the most sailings, the most experienced Alaska crews, and strong shore excursion programs. Celebrity is popular for its upscale experience. Norwegian is a good value pick. For a first Alaska cruise, I typically recommend Holland America or Princess.
When should I book an Alaska cruise?
Alaska's peak season is June–August, and popular sailings with good cabin selection book 9–12 months ahead. Excursions like helicopter glacier tours and floatplane trips book out even earlier. Early booking also locks in the best cabin pricing before increases.
Is a cruisetour worth it?
It depends on your priorities. A cruisetour adds Denali National Park — a full day in the park with wildlife viewing and mountain scenery — plus the Alaska Railroad. It adds 3–4 days and significant cost, but for many travelers, Denali is the highlight of the entire trip. I'll walk through the decision honestly based on your time and budget. More questions
Here are a few additional details that come up often.
Do I need a passport for an Alaska cruise?
For Inside Passage round-trip sailings from Seattle, a passport is not technically required (you stay in US and Canadian waters), but a passport is strongly recommended — if you miss the ship at a Canadian port, you'll need one. For one-way Gulf of Alaska itineraries flying in or out of Anchorage, normal domestic ID rules apply. I always recommend traveling with a passport regardless.
What is Icy Strait Point and is it worth a stop?
Icy Strait Point is a privately owned port near Hoonah, Alaska — one of the most authentically Alaska experiences on any cruise itinerary. It's less crowded than Juneau or Ketchikan, offers excellent whale watching (humpback feeding grounds nearby), and has a genuine Alaska Native cultural experience. Many Alaska cruisers consider it the best port on the itinerary. Not all ships stop there — it's worth seeking out.
