Great Lakes Cruises from Milwaukee and Chicago: A Guide for Northern Illinois

Which lines sail the Great Lakes in 2027, what they cost, who they suit, and how to get to the Milwaukee or Chicago pier from Rockford. Advisor-written.

Ocean cruise ship on the open water

You can take a real ocean-style cruise without getting on a plane: several small ships start and end in Milwaukee or Chicago, and both are 90 minutes to two hours from Rockford. For 2027, Viking, Pearl Seas, Victory Cruise Lines, American Cruise Lines, Ponant and Hapag-Lloyd all sail the Great Lakes, mostly from May through September. Plan on roughly $5,300 to $10,000+ per person for 7 to 10 nights on the most popular lines, and plan to book by January for the best cabins.

Which cruise lines sail the Great Lakes in 2027?

Six lines have Great Lakes sailings announced or on sale for 2027: Viking, Pearl Seas, Victory Cruise Lines, American Cruise Lines, Ponant (often as Smithsonian Journeys or Tauck charters) and Hapag-Lloyd. Every one of them uses small ships, 130 to 378 guests, because big cruise ships can't fit through the Welland Canal and Soo Locks.

One line you may remember is gone. American Queen Voyages, which sailed the Great Lakes, shut down in February 2024. Its two Great Lakes ships, Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator, came back as Victory I and Victory II under the revived Victory Cruise Lines. If you see an old review of "American Queen" on the Great Lakes, it's about the same ships under a different company.

Lindblad (National Geographic) doesn't list any Great Lakes sailings; its North America voyages focus on Alaska, Canada's coasts and the Pacific.

Here's how they compare:

Line Ship (guests) Main embark ports 2027 "from" price Highlights Best for
Viking Octantis / Polaris (378 each) Milwaukee, Toronto, Duluth $7,499 (8 days); $8,999 (10 days) Expedition gear, kayaks, Zodiacs, science team; adults only (18+) Curious travelers who like comfort plus some adventure
Pearl Seas Pearl Mist (210) Milwaukee, Toronto, Duluth Not posted online; ask me for current fares All balcony cabins; drinks and excursions included Relaxed, very inclusive, older crowd
Victory Cruise Lines Victory I / Victory II (190 each) Chicago (Navy Pier), Toronto $5,299 (10 nights) Cocktails, beer and wine included, pre-cruise hotel night, one tour per port Value, and you can board in Chicago
American Cruise Lines American Patriot (130) Milwaukee, Cleveland Ask me for 2027 dates and fares All-U.S. routes, no passport needed; no-supplement solo rooms Travelers without passports, solo travelers
Ponant (Smithsonian / Tauck) Le Bellot (184) Milwaukee, Toronto $8,720 (8 nights, Smithsonian); $11,690 (Tauck land + cruise) French small-ship style, expert-led Travelers who want lectures and a tour-company feel
Hapag-Lloyd Hanseatic inspiration (230) Milwaukee, Halifax €15,490 (21 days) All five lakes plus St. Lawrence Long-trip luxury; German-speaking line, so check that your sailing is bilingual

Prices are per person, double occupancy, cruise-only unless noted, and they change often. Viking's prices come from Viking's Great Lakes page, which lists them as U.S.-resident fares. Victory's come from Victory's site as of October 2026.

Can you take a Great Lakes cruise from Milwaukee?

Yes. Milwaukee is the busiest Great Lakes cruise port near us: Viking, Pearl Seas, American Cruise Lines, Ponant and Hapag-Lloyd all start or end trips there, and Victory's ships call there too (Port Milwaukee). For Rockford, Belvidere and Beloit travelers, it's the easiest "no-fly" cruise port we have.

Port Milwaukee expected 64 cruise ship calls in 2026, including 32 turnaround visits, from late April through October. The main cruise dock is downtown at Pier Wisconsin/Discovery World. The port's alternate berth is the new South Shore cruise dock at 2320 S. Lincoln Memorial Drive, next to the Lake Express ferry terminal, which replaces the old Jones Island dock. Your cruise documents will say which dock you're using.

Popular 2027 sailings that start or end in Milwaukee:

  • Viking "Great Lakes Treasures" (10 days, round trip from Milwaukee): Mackinac Island, Killarney and Georgian Bay, Fathom Five National Marine Park, the North Channel, Sault Ste. Marie, Door County and Chicago, then back to Milwaukee. Sample September 2027 itinerary.
  • Viking "Niagara & the Great Lakes" (8 days, Toronto to Milwaukee, also sails Milwaukee to Toronto): Mackinac Island, Alpena, Detroit, Point Pelee, the Welland Canal and Niagara. 2027 departures from Milwaukee include May 31, July 12 and September 10.
  • Pearl Seas lists 7-night Milwaukee–Toronto and 11-night Toronto–Milwaukee Great Lakes & Georgian Bay trips, a 14-night Toronto–Duluth Great Lakes Explorer, and a 15-night Milwaukee–Quebec City trip (Pearl Seas). The line said in 2026 that 2027 was "already filling up fast." Its site doesn't show 2027 dates yet, so ask me for the current schedule.
  • American Cruise Lines ran a 9-day Lake Michigan & Upper Peninsula trip round trip from Milwaukee and a 14-day Cleveland–Milwaukee trip in 2026 (Seatrade), and said all three of its Great Lakes itineraries would get more departures in 2027.
  • Ponant / Smithsonian Journeys "A Voyage Along the Great Lakes" on Le Bellot, Milwaukee to Toronto, August 21–29, 2027 (listing).
  • Hapag-Lloyd on Hanseatic inspiration: Milwaukee to Halifax August 20–September 10, 2027, and Halifax back to Milwaukee September 10–October 1 (Cruise Industry News).

Can you take a Great Lakes cruise from Chicago?

Yes, but you have fewer choices. Victory Cruise Lines is the main line that starts and ends trips in Chicago, docking at Navy Pier. Viking's 10-day "Great Lakes Treasures" stops in Chicago for a day, and Tauck's Ponant trip finishes with two hotel nights in Chicago.

For 2027, Victory has 19 voyages that sail all five Great Lakes, including 10-night Chicago–Toronto trips and 15-night Chicago round trips up to Lake Superior and Thunder Bay. Their fares include a pre-cruise hotel night, transfers, standard cocktails, beer and wine, Wi-Fi and one shore excursion per port (Victory FAQ). Gratuities are extra, at $18.50 per guest per day. Victory also announced a 35-night "Grand Great Half Loop" from Chicago to Jacksonville for people with a lot of time (Porthole).

Tauck's "Cruising the Great Lakes" trip runs Toronto to Chicago, August 27–September 7, 2027, with seven nights on a Ponant ship and two hotel nights at each end, from $11,690 per person (listing).

If you're set on boarding at Navy Pier, Victory is the one to look at. If you're flexible, Milwaukee gives you more lines and more dates, and it's an easier drive from Rockford.

How much does a Great Lakes cruise cost?

For 2027, expect about $7,500 to $10,000 per person for 7 to 9 nights on Viking or Ponant, with Victory usually lower and Hapag-Lloyd and long Viking trips much higher. That's more per night than a Caribbean cruise, but the fares include far more.

A few real numbers:

  • Viking: from $7,499 (8 days) and $8,999 (10 days) on Viking's site. One agency lists balconies from $10,099 on some peak 2027 dates. Viking also adds a $20 per guest per night service charge on voyages from January 1, 2026 (CruiseWeb).
  • Ponant/Smithsonian: from $8,720 for 8 nights in a balcony.
  • Victory: 10-night Chicago–Toronto trips from $5,299 on early and late-season dates and about $6,500 in summer, with 15-night Chicago round trips from $8,399 (Victory, as of October 2026).
  • Hapag-Lloyd: from €15,490 for 21 days.

Why it costs more: there are only a handful of ships, maybe a few thousand cabins for the whole summer, and they sell to people across the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia. Plus, the price usually covers excursions, Wi-Fi, and often drinks and a hotel night.

Promotions matter a lot. Viking often runs airfare offers or reduced deposits, and Victory and Pearl Seas run booking specials too. Promos change month to month, so let me check the current offers before you lock anything in.

What's included on a Great Lakes cruise?

Most Great Lakes lines are close to all-inclusive. You'll usually get all meals, at least one shore excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, and lectures. Many lines also include drinks and a pre-cruise hotel night. Gratuities and premium drinks are where they differ.

On Viking, the excursion can be a Zodiac ride, kayaking or a walking tour. The ships carry small submarines, but those 30-minute dives cost $499 per person.

Who is a Great Lakes cruise best for?

Great Lakes cruises are best for adults who like history, scenery and small ships, and don't need waterslides or a casino. Most guests are retirees or empty nesters, so they aren't really family trips.

This is a good fit if you:

  • Want a cruise without flying, or without a long flight.
  • Love the idea of a river cruise but want to stay in North America. (If you're torn, my European river cruise planning guide shows how much these trips have in common.)
  • Prefer a quiet ship, good food and a lecture over nightclubs.
  • Like the idea of Mackinac Island, Georgian Bay and Lake Superior, but don't want to plan a road trip around them.

It's probably not a fit if you:

  • Have kids. Viking's ships are adults only, 18 and up, and the other lines offer nothing aimed at children.
  • Want a cheap cruise. A Caribbean cruise from Florida will cost much less per night. See my ocean cruise planning page for options.
  • Get anxious about plans changing. Weather and lock traffic can change ports. On one Victory trip, the ship skipped Lake Superior because of heavy traffic at the Soo Locks (Frommer's).

Accessibility: Small ships mean shorter walks, but also tenders and Zodiacs in some ports. If someone in your group uses a wheelchair or scooter, read my wheelchair-accessible travel page and talk with me before you book. Some ships and ports are much easier than others.

Do you need a passport for a Great Lakes cruise?

Yes, for almost every Great Lakes cruise, because most of them stop in Canada (Toronto, Georgian Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, or Thunder Bay). Plan on a valid passport for everyone in your group.

The exception is American Cruise Lines. Its Great Lakes trips begin, end and stay in the U.S., so no passport is needed. That makes it a good choice if you don't have a passport and don't want to get one.

If you need a passport or a renewal, apply in the fall or early winter before a summer sailing. Spring is the busy season at passport offices.

What are the best ports and sights on a Great Lakes cruise?

The stops people talk about most are Mackinac Island, Georgian Bay, the Soo Locks and Lake Superior's north shore. Which ones you see depends on the line and the route.

  • Mackinac Island, Michigan. No cars, horse-drawn carriages, fudge shops and the Grand Hotel. Almost every itinerary stops here. Viking includes a horse-drawn carriage tour (itinerary details).
  • Georgian Bay and the North Channel, Ontario. Pink granite, pine islands and clear water around Killarney, the Benjamin Islands and Fathom Five National Marine Park. This is where Viking's kayaks and Zodiacs come out.
  • Soo Locks, Sault Ste. Marie. Watching your ship rise about 21 feet between Lake Huron and Lake Superior is a highlight for anyone who likes engineering.
  • Thunder Bay and Duluth. Lake Superior's rugged north shore. Victory runs Chicago round trips up to Thunder Bay, and Viking starts or ends some trips in Duluth.
  • Welland Canal and Niagara Falls. Routes between Toronto and the western lakes go through the canal, with a Niagara Falls excursion.
  • Detroit. The Henry Ford Museum is one of Viking's included tours.

When is the best time to take a Great Lakes cruise?

The season runs from late April or May through early October, and July and August are the warmest and most popular months. June and September cost a bit less, have fewer crowds, and often have very nice weather.

What to expect:

  • May and early June: cool, with daytime temperatures in the 50s and 60s and colder water. Fewer people, lower fares.
  • July and August: usually 70s and low 80s on land. Lake Superior stays cool, so bring layers even in August.
  • September: the start of fall color up north, especially Lake Superior and Georgian Bay. It's one of my favorite times to recommend.
  • October: only a few sailings, often cold and windy.

Pack the way you would for an Alaska cruise: layers, a rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes. My Alaska cruise guide has a good layering list.

How do you get to a Great Lakes cruise from Rockford?

Most people just drive. Milwaukee is about 90 miles and roughly an hour and 45 minutes from Rockford, usually via I-90 and I-43. Chicago's Navy Pier is about the same distance, but Chicago traffic can make it a lot longer.

My tips:

  • Stay the night before. Even on a drive-to cruise, I always suggest arriving the day before. A crash on I-90 or a Kennedy backup shouldn't make you miss the ship. Victory and American Cruise Lines include a hotel night, and Viking sells pre-cruise extensions in Milwaukee, Toronto, Duluth and Chicago.
  • Ask about parking early. Port Milwaukee doesn't offer long-term parking for cruise passengers; it points people to other lots in the city, including Milwaukee's Mitchell airport. Navy Pier's garages are open around the clock but cost more than $50 a day. Often the easiest choice is to park at your pre-cruise hotel, if it allows it, and take the line's transfer.
  • Consider a ride. With the Landline bus to O'Hare gone since October 4, 2026 (see Rockford to O'Hare after Landline), many Stateline travelers drive or book a car service.
  • Starting in Toronto or Duluth? If your trip starts or ends somewhere else, you'll fly one way. Viking often runs airfare offers. Check my Stateline travel planning guide for airport options from Rockford.

When should you book a 2027 Great Lakes cruise?

Book by January 2027 for summer 2027, and earlier if you want a suite or a July or August departure. These ships are small and the season is short, so the best dates sell out first.

Pearl Seas said its summer 2026 Great Lakes sailings were essentially sold out by the time the season started, and that 2027 and 2028 were filling fast. Viking is already selling 2028 voyages.

Because these trips cost more and stop in Canada, I strongly suggest travel insurance. Read my travel insurance guide before you pay a deposit, since some benefits depend on buying insurance soon after your first payment.

How I help with Great Lakes cruises

I'm a cruise specialist here in Rockford, and Great Lakes cruises are one of the few cruises where "close to home" and "high end" go together. My job is to match you with the right line before you spend $15,000 or more for two.

Here's what I do:

  • Compare Viking, Pearl Seas, Victory and the others for your dates, budget and travel style.
  • Check current promotions and book early enough for good cabins.
  • Plan the pieces around the cruise: a pre-cruise hotel, how to get to Milwaukee or Chicago, and a one-way flight home from Toronto or Duluth if you need one.
  • Flag mobility issues, passport timing and insurance before they become problems.

If you're also thinking about Europe, I plan European river cruises too, and I'm happy to help you compare. If this would be your first cruise, start with my first cruise tips. For more no-fly options, see Closest cruise ports to Chicago and Rockford.

My planning is free to you. The cruise lines pay me, not you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Great Lakes cruise line?

It depends on what you want. Viking is the most popular for its modern ships and expedition extras. Pearl Seas and Victory include more drinks, and Victory lets you board in Chicago. American Cruise Lines is the one whose Great Lakes trips stay in the U.S., so no passport is needed.

How long is a Great Lakes cruise?

Most are 7 to 10 nights. Some, like Viking's 15-day Great Lakes Collection or Hapag-Lloyd's 21-day voyages, run two to three weeks.

Is a Viking Great Lakes cruise worth it?

For adults who want small-ship comfort, included tours and a lot of science and history, many travelers think so. It costs more than most ocean cruises, so it's worth comparing to Pearl Seas and Victory first.

Can kids go on a Great Lakes cruise?

Viking doesn't allow guests under 18. Other lines may allow kids, but there are no kids' clubs, and the passengers are mostly retirees.

Do Great Lakes cruise ships get rough?

The lakes are usually calmer than the ocean, but storms can bring real waves, especially on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Small ships move more than big ones, so bring motion-sickness medicine if you're prone to it.

What is the closest Great Lakes cruise port to Rockford?

Milwaukee and Chicago are about equal in distance, roughly 90 miles. Milwaukee has more cruise lines and dates, and usually an easier drive.
