Christmas Vacation from Rockford: Winter Break Beach Trips Before the RFD Charters Start

Winter break beach trips from Rockford before the RFD charters start: Allegiant to Florida, O'Hare to Cancún, holiday cruises, and tips for autistic kids.

Adults-only resort infinity pool overlooking the ocean

If you want a beach over Christmas or New Year's from Rockford, your nonstop choices from RFD are Allegiant's Florida flights (plus Phoenix-Mesa and Las Vegas for sunshine without the ocean). The RFD charters to Cancún, Punta Cana and Costa Rica don't start until late January. For Mexico or the Caribbean over the holidays, you'll fly out of O'Hare or Milwaukee and pay holiday prices, or you'll fly Allegiant to Florida and get on a cruise ship. Whichever you pick, it's mid-October now, and the holiday seats and rooms that are left are going fast.

When is winter break for Rockford schools this year?

Rockford Public Schools (RPS 205) winter break runs Monday, December 21, 2026 through Friday, January 1, 2027, with school back on Monday, January 4, per the district calendar.

That makes your realistic travel window Saturday, December 19 through Sunday, January 3. That's 16 days, and it includes the two most expensive travel weeks of the year.

Harlem, Hononegah, Belvidere, Freeport and DeKalb districts set their own calendars, so check yours. Even a one-day difference changes which flights work for your family.

A few patterns hold every year:

  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are often the cheapest days to fly, because most people want to be home by then.
  • The Saturday before Christmas and the Saturday/Sunday after New Year's are the most crowded and most expensive days to travel.
  • The week between Christmas and New Year's is peak season at Florida theme parks and on cruise ships.

Why can't I take the RFD charter to Cancún over Christmas?

The charters don't start until after the holidays. For the 2027 season, RFD's nonstop Apple Vacations charters start January 23 for Cancún and January 24 for Punta Cana, and the new Liberia, Costa Rica charter starts February 5. That's according to Rock River Current and Rockford News First.

So the easiest way to get from Rockford to an all-inclusive doesn't exist over winter break. A lot of local families find this out in November, when they go to book and can't find a flight.

If your family can travel in late January or February, the charters really are the simplest way to get a beach from Rockford. I wrote about how they work in Direct flights from Rockford (RFD), and spring break has its own guide: Spring break 2027 from Rockford.

For Christmas and New Year's, here are your real choices.

Which Allegiant flights from Rockford go to the beach in December?

Allegiant is the only airline with regular nonstop flights from RFD. Its beach-friendly destinations are Orlando Sanford (SFB), St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE), Sarasota (SRQ), Punta Gorda (PGD) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL). Phoenix-Mesa (AZA) and Las Vegas (LAS) are the warm options without an ocean.

The RFD destinations page lists all of these, plus Nashville. Fort Lauderdale is the newest Allegiant route; it started February 12, 2026.

Neither RFD nor Allegiant's route map lists which days each route flies, and in the fall many RFD routes run only a few times a month. Check allegiant.com for the exact December 19 – January 3 dates before you plan the rest of the trip.

Here's what Allegiant families need to know:

  • Allegiant doesn't fly every day. Many RFD routes run only two or a few days a week, and in the fall some run less often than that. The flight days decide how long your trip is, so you plan the trip around them.
  • Holiday flights sell out. When a route has only a couple of departures that week, the cheap seats on the Saturday before Christmas go early. Prices only go up from mid-October.
  • The low fare is only the start. Seat assignments, carry-ons and checked bags all cost extra. With kids, price the bags and seats together before comparing against O'Hare.
  • Parking at RFD is cheap. Advance parking runs $8 a day, drive-up is $9 a day, and valet is $12 a day, per RFD's parking page. That's a fraction of O'Hare parking for a 10-day trip.
  • Plan for a bad-weather day. Allegiant has less backup than a big airline if a flight cancels. I build trips so a lost day doesn't sink everything, and I strongly suggest travel insurance for holiday trips.

Which Florida airport fits which trip?

  • Orlando Sanford (SFB): Disney, Universal, and cruises from Port Canaveral. Sanford is north of Orlando, so plan on a longer drive to the parks than from Orlando International.
  • St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE) and Sarasota (SRQ): Gulf beaches like Clearwater, St. Pete Beach and Siesta Key, plus cruises from Tampa.
  • Punta Gorda (PGD): Quieter Gulf towns like Englewood, Boca Grande and Fort Myers Beach, and a slower pace in general.
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL): The warmest water on the list, and cruises from Port Everglades.

How warm is Florida in late December, really?

Florida in late December is warm for Rockford, but it isn't summer. Expect sunny 70s on most days, cooler mornings and evenings, and a few days in the 60s when a cold front comes through. The ocean is cool enough on the Gulf side that many kids will play at the water's edge instead of swimming.

Typical December conditions (these are averages, not promises):

Area Typical daytime highs Typical water temp
Clearwater / St. Pete / Sarasota (Gulf) low 70s °F mid-to-upper 60s °F
Punta Gorda / Fort Myers (Gulf) mid-to-upper 70s °F upper 60s to about 70 °F
Orlando (inland) low-to-mid 70s °F, nights in the low 50s —
Fort Lauderdale (Atlantic) upper 70s °F mid-70s °F
Cancún (for comparison) low-to-mid 80s °F around 80 °F

Water temperatures for Florida are December averages from NOAA's Coastal Water Temperature Guide (Fort Lauderdale uses the nearby Lake Worth Pier and Virginia Key stations). Highs are 1991–2020 climate normals.

What this means for your family:

  • Book a heated pool. For the Gulf Coast in December, a heated resort pool matters more than which beach the hotel is on.
  • Pack layers. Bring hoodies, long pants and a light jacket for evenings, especially in Orlando and on the Gulf.
  • If swimming in the ocean is the whole point, Fort Lauderdale is your best Allegiant option. Cancún or the Caribbean are warmer still, but they mean flying out of O'Hare.

Is Disney or Universal worth it over Christmas break?

Disney and Universal at Christmas are beautiful, and they're also as crowded as they ever get. The week between Christmas and New Year's is one of the busiest weeks of the year at Walt Disney World. If your family handles crowds well and you plan ahead, it can be wonderful. If you don't, it's hard.

Some of what's on the calendar this year:

  • Disney's 2026 holiday season runs mid-November through January 6, 2027, and the EPCOT Festival of the Holidays runs November 27–December 30, 2026, per Disney Tourist Blog. The same article notes the first week of January is typically the second-busiest week of the year.
  • Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party runs on select nights in November and December, and dates are already starting to sell out.
  • Ticket and hotel prices are at their highest over the holidays. I broke down typical costs in How much does a Disney vacation cost from Illinois?, and I price your exact dates when you're ready.

If you go, here's how I'd do it:

  • Stay on-site. Disney Resort hotel guests can buy Lightning Lane Multi Passes up to 7 days before their stay; other guests get 3 days before each park day (Walt Disney World). Over the holidays, those extra days matter.
  • Set alarms for dining. Dining reservations open 60 days ahead at 6 a.m. Eastern. For a December 26 dinner, that's late October, which is basically now.
  • Get to rope drop early and take a midday break. By early afternoon the parks are packed, so go back to the hotel pool.
  • Think about mid-December if your kids can miss a few days of school. The decorations are all up and the crowds are noticeably lighter.
  • Universal Orlando decorates for the holidays too and gets just as crowded. Its 2026 holiday season runs November 14 through January 3, 2027 (WFTV). My Universal Orlando autism guide covers its accessibility program.

Should we fly out of O'Hare or Milwaukee for Cancún or the Caribbean?

If you want warm water and an all-inclusive over Christmas, flying from O'Hare or Milwaukee is the way to get it. You'll pay a holiday premium for both flights and resorts, so book early. O'Hare has nonstops on major airlines to popular beach destinations like Cancún, Punta Cana and Montego Bay, but which airlines fly which days over the holidays changes every year, so I check current schedules when I quote your trip.

What to expect:

  • Holiday pricing. Resorts charge peak rates from Christmas through New Year's, and many have minimum stays over those dates. Flights on the Saturday before Christmas cost much more than flights midweek.
  • Passports. Every child needs one for an international flight. If anyone in your family doesn't have one yet, apply now. As of October 2026, the State Department says routine processing takes 4–6 weeks and expedited takes 2–3 weeks, not counting up to 2 weeks for mail each way (State Department).
  • Getting to O'Hare. Landline, the American Airlines bus from RFD to O'Hare, ended on October 4, 2026, so it's no longer an option. The Van Galder bus still runs between Rockford and O'Hare from its terminal at 7559 Walton St., on the same schedule every day of the year. As of October 2026, Coach USA lists a one-way online fare of $28.20 before fuel surcharge and fees; check the Coach USA Van Galder page for current times and fares. I cover this in more detail in Rockford to O'Hare after Landline.
  • Milwaukee (MKE) is about the same drive from much of the Stateline, and parking and security there are often easier than at O'Hare. It's worth pricing too.

If you're debating destinations, my Mexico vs. Dominican Republic vs. Jamaica comparison and Is Cancún safe for families? can help. I also plan all-inclusive resort trips.

What about a Christmas or New Year's cruise from Florida?

A holiday cruise is one of the best values for winter break. You fly Allegiant to Florida, sail south to warmer water, and most of your meals and entertainment are already paid for. Cruise lines decorate for the holidays, and many ships throw a New Year's Eve party on deck.

How it works from Rockford:

  • Fly into SFB for cruises from Port Canaveral, PIE or SRQ for Tampa, or FLL for Port Everglades.
  • Always fly in the day before you sail. With Allegiant's limited schedule, that's especially important in December. If your flight cancels the morning of departure, the ship leaves without you.
  • Sailing from Fort Lauderdale gets you to warm Caribbean water fastest.
  • Holiday sailings book up early and cost more than early-December or January sailings. Interior cabins usually sell out first.
  • For a quieter holiday cruise, look at a shorter 3–5 night sailing. I can check which holiday sailings still have space for your dates.

I'm a two-time Royal Caribbean Partner of the Year, and Caribbean cruise planning is a big part of what I do. If you're new to cruising, start with my first cruise tips.

How do I handle holiday travel with autistic kids?

Holiday trips stack disruptions on top of each other: no school routine, crowded airports, new foods, and the excitement (and letdown) of Christmas itself. What helps most is keeping one or two things predictable, choosing quieter places when you can, and building in more downtime than you think you'll need.

These are the things I plan for:

  • Keep some of your home routine. Same bedtime, same breakfast if you can manage it, and the same comfort items. If Christmas morning at home matters to your kids, fly out on the 26th.
  • Use the airport tools. Call TSA Cares at least 72 hours before you fly at (855) 787-2227 (TSA). Ask the airline for a DPNA code on your reservation. RFD is small and calm compared with O'Hare, which is one of the best reasons to fly Allegiant. I go through all of this in Traveling with two kids on the spectrum.
  • Pick quieter places. A Gulf Coast condo in Punta Gorda or Englewood with a heated pool can feel more like a vacation for some kids than a theme park ever will.
  • Front-load the parks if you go. Disney's DAS lets you register by video chat as early as 60 days before a park visit (Walt Disney World), so for a trip starting December 21, your window opens around October 22. My guides on using DAS and planning Disney with an autistic child cover the rest.
  • Cruises can work well. You unpack once, the cabin is the same every night, and the routine on board is predictable. See why autism families choose cruises.
  • Talk through Christmas-away-from-home beforehand. Use pictures of where you're staying, where the presents will be, and how Santa finds the hotel. Social stories help here too.

How I help

I'm Bonnie Nofsinger, a travel advisor here in Rockford, and I'm a mom of two kids on the spectrum. I'm also an IBCCES Certified Autism Travel Professional. For winter break, I start with your school calendar and Allegiant's actual flight days. Then I compare the full cost (bags, seats, parking, transfers) against flying from O'Hare or Milwaukee, so you're comparing real totals.

I book Disney through Magical Vacation Planner, a Diamond-Level Authorized Disney Vacation Planner agency. I also book cruises and all-inclusives, and I watch for price drops after you book. If your kids need a quieter trip, I'll say so, and I'll help you find one that still feels like a holiday. Planning with me is free for you, because suppliers pay me. You can learn more about my autism travel planning service.

Frequently asked questions

Does Allegiant fly from Rockford over Christmas?

Allegiant serves its Florida cities and the Southwest from RFD, but not every route flies every day, and some routes are seasonal. Check the exact December 2026 days on allegiant.com before you plan the rest of the trip.

When does the Rockford charter to Cancún start in 2027?

January 23, 2027, with Punta Cana starting January 24 and Liberia, Costa Rica starting February 5. There are no RFD charter flights during winter break.

Is the ocean warm enough to swim in Florida at Christmas?

On the Gulf Coast, December water averages in the mid-to-upper 60s °F, which is too cool for most kids to swim for long. Fort Lauderdale is warmer, in the mid-70s °F. Book a heated pool either way.

Is it too late to book a Christmas trip in October?

No, but your choices are shrinking every week. Allegiant's holiday seats, Disney dining slots and holiday cruise cabins usually go first. Book this month if you can.

Can I still take Landline from Rockford to O'Hare?

No. Landline ended on October 4, 2026. Van Galder buses still run between Rockford and O'Hare, or you can drive and park.

Is Disney at Christmas a good idea with autistic kids?

It can be, with DAS, an on-site hotel, early mornings and long midday breaks. If crowds are a hard no for your kids, look at early or mid-December instead, or plan a quiet beach trip.

If your family wants sun this winter break, call or text me at (815) 904-9755, or use the contact form at magicbeantravel.com. Tell me your school dates and what your kids need, and I'll show you which options still have space.
