Spring Break 2027 from Rockford: Every Nonstop and Charter Option Compared

Every nonstop and charter from Rockford (RFD) for spring break 2027: Cancun, Punta Cana, Costa Rica, Florida, Vegas, Phoenix. Dates, timing, tips.

Tropical all-inclusive resort pool with ocean view

Spring break 2027 from Rockford has more nonstop choices than most families realize: three Apple Vacations charters (Cancún, Punta Cana and, new this year, Liberia, Costa Rica) plus Allegiant's scheduled flights to Florida, Phoenix-Mesa and Las Vegas. The charters stop flying in early April, and RPS 205's break appears to fall in the very last week they fly, so the best seats will go early. Below I compare every option side by side, line them up against local school calendars and explain when O'Hare is still the better choice.

What nonstop flights leave Rockford (RFD) during spring break 2027?

For spring break 2027, RFD has three international vacation charters (Cancún, Punta Cana and Liberia, Costa Rica) and Allegiant nonstops to Florida, Arizona and Las Vegas. The charters are sold through Apple Vacations and its sister brands Funjet Vacations and Travel Impressions, as flight-only seats or full packages (Rock River Current).

Charter days and dates come from the Apple Vacations 2027 RFD schedule, which lists the RFD public charters under GlobalX (Costa Rican press reports TUI Airways for the Liberia route). Apple hasn't published charter flight times yet; they'll be on your booking. Allegiant flight times come from FlightsFrom schedule snapshots, and Allegiant's days of the week change month to month. Always confirm on allegiantair.com before you plan around a specific day.

A few things changed from last year. Huatulco, which flew from RFD in 2026, is not on the 2027 schedule. Costa Rica takes its place. And Allegiant's Fort Lauderdale route, which started February 12, 2026, adds a nonstop to Florida's Atlantic coast (Rockford News First).

When are the RFD charter flights to Cancún, Punta Cana and Costa Rica?

The 2027 RFD charters run from late January to early April: Cancún January 23–April 5, Punta Cana January 24–April 1, and Liberia, Costa Rica February 5–April 2 (Rockford News First / WIFR).

Those are the full season windows, including return flights. The last outbound departures matter more for spring break, and according to the Apple Vacations schedule they are:

  • Cancún: last departure Wednesday, March 31. Stays from 2 to 14 nights.
  • Punta Cana: last departure Sunday, March 28 (3, 4, 7 or 10 nights). News coverage says Punta Cana flights end April 1, but a 7-night stay from March 28 would return April 4, so I confirm the actual return date with Apple before you book a late-March Punta Cana week.
  • Liberia, Costa Rica: last departure Friday, March 26, for 7 or 14 nights.

So unlike the Allegiant routes, the charters simply aren't there after the first week of April. If your district's break falls in mid-April, the charters are off the table, and you're looking at Allegiant or O'Hare.

For a deeper look at how charters work (bundled packages, fixed dates, stricter change rules), see my guide to direct flights from Rockford.

When is spring break 2027 for Rockford-area schools?

Rockford Public Schools 205's spring break is listed as March 29–April 2, 2027, but that comes from unofficial calendar sites, so confirm it with the district before you book anything nonrefundable. Belvidere and Hononegah break a week earlier, March 22–26, and Harlem's break starts March 26.

Here's what I've found so far. Check your own district's calendar before booking, since dates can change:

District Spring break 2027 Source Status
Rockford Public Schools 205 Mar 29–Apr 2 (Good Friday, Mar 26, also listed off) EduCounty, CalendarStates Unofficial; confirm with RPS 205
Harlem 122 Mar 26–Apr 2 Harlem 122 district calendar From the district's own calendar
Belvidere 100 Mar 22–26 District 100 2026–27 calendar From the district's own calendar
Hononegah 207 Mar 22–26, plus Mar 29 off 2026–27 HCHS calendar PDF District calendar, posted on a third-party site; days listed as "not in attendance"
School District of Beloit (WI) Not posted where I could find it District calendar Check the district site

Easter is March 28, 2027, which is why so many local breaks cluster around those two weeks. That also means you're traveling during a popular week for families across the Midwest, not just in Rockford.

Which RFD options line up with your school's break?

RPS 205 families can match the break almost exactly with a Saturday Cancún departure (March 27) or a Sunday Punta Cana departure (March 28). Families in districts that break March 22–26 have every charter available, Costa Rica included. Here's how the calendar works out.

If your break is March 29–April 2 (RPS 205, Harlem): - Cancún: Leave Saturday, March 27, return Saturday, April 3 (7 nights). Or leave Monday, March 29 for a shorter stay. - Punta Cana: Leave Sunday, March 28, for 7 nights. Confirm the return date with Apple first (see above). - Costa Rica: The last departure is Friday, March 26 (Good Friday), returning Friday, April 2. If Good Friday really is a day off for your kids, you get a full week without missing school. - Allegiant: Any route that's flying that week.

If your break is March 22–26 (Belvidere, Hononegah): - Cancún: Leave Saturday, March 20, return Saturday, March 27. - Punta Cana: Leave Sunday, March 21, return Sunday, March 28. - Costa Rica: Leave Friday, March 19, return Friday, March 26. This costs one school day on the front end, or skip it and choose a Saturday or Sunday charter.

Because the charter is the only nonstop to each destination, a sold-out date really is sold out. There is no "next flight" from RFD that afternoon.

How do the charters compare with Allegiant?

Charters are best for an all-inclusive beach week with transfers handled. Allegiant is best when you want Florida, Arizona or Vegas on your own terms, or a trip that isn't 7 nights. They're very different products that happen to use the same small airport.

Apple Vacations charter Allegiant scheduled flight
How you book Package (flight + resort + transfers) or flight-only seat Airline ticket on allegiantair.com
Trip length Set durations (2–14 nights for Cancún; 7 or 14 for Costa Rica) Any length
Passport needed Yes, passport book for everyone No; REAL ID-compliant ID for adults
Change and cancellation Stricter; deposits often nonrefundable Allegiant fare rules; extras cost more
Bags First checked bag $40 per flight prepaid, unless your fare class includes one Paid add-ons
Season Late January to early April only Most routes year-round or long seasonal

If you're deciding between Mexico and the Dominican Republic, my Mexico vs. Dominican Republic vs. Jamaica comparison goes deeper, and the all-inclusive resorts from Rockford guide covers which resorts pair well with each charter. If safety is on your mind, see Is Cancún safe for families?. Costa Rica is the newcomer, and I have a full Costa Rica from Rockford guide for families weighing it.

How early should you book spring break 2027 from Rockford?

Book spring break charters now. October is about five months out, and the most popular resort-and-date combinations for Easter-week travel are the first to go. Allegiant has a little more breathing room, but not much for this particular week.

A simple timeline:

  • October–November 2026: Book charter packages for March 20–April 4. Lock in the resort type you want (family suites, kids' club, adults-only).
  • Within about 14–21 days of your first deposit: Look at travel insurance. Many policies only cover pre-existing conditions if you buy within a set window after your first payment. My travel insurance guide explains what to look for.
  • December–January: Book Allegiant spring break fares if you haven't already. Allegiant runs frequent sales, but Easter-week seats rarely get cheaper as the date approaches.
  • By early January: Start passport applications (see below).
  • Before your final payment date: Check the date on your package booking, since that's when your deposit usually becomes harder to recover.

Package prices generally go up as a charter fills. Waiting for a deal works in September for a random week in February. It rarely works for spring break. Spring break and Easter week usually sit at the top of the price range, so ask me for current quotes rather than relying on last year's numbers.

Do you need a passport for spring break from RFD?

Yes, everyone flying the Cancún, Punta Cana or Costa Rica charters needs a valid passport book, including babies. A passport card won't work for international flights. Allegiant flights within the U.S. only need a REAL ID-compliant ID for adults.

As of October 5, 2026, the State Department lists routine processing at 4–6 weeks and expedited at 2–3 weeks, not counting up to two weeks of mailing each way (U.S. State Department). The State Department also notes that demand peaks from late winter through summer, which is exactly when spring break families apply.

My advice: if anyone in your family needs a new or renewed passport for a late-March trip, apply by early January. Children under 16 need both parents present, or a notarized consent form, at the appointment (State Department). Check each country's entry rules on the State Department's country pages, and remember the Dominican Republic requires an electronic entry/exit form (eTicket) for every traveler, for each entry and exit (State Department).

For local acceptance facilities and photo tips, see my Passports in Rockford guide.

Can you combine an RFD flight with a Florida cruise?

Yes. Allegiant's Florida routes put Rockford families within easy reach of three major cruise ports: Orlando Sanford for Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale for Port Everglades, and St. Pete–Clearwater or Sarasota for Tampa. A spring break cruise is a great fit if you want the Caribbean without committing to one resort.

How I'd pair them:

  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) + Port Everglades: The airport and cruise port are only minutes apart. This is the simplest fly-and-cruise combination RFD has ever had.
  • Orlando Sanford (SFB) + Port Canaveral: About an hour's drive. Port Canaveral is home port for Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival ships. You can also add a few days at Disney or Universal before you sail.
  • St. Pete–Clearwater (PIE) or Sarasota (SRQ) + Tampa: Shorter Western Caribbean sailings, often to Cozumel. Check that the route you want is flying in late March before you book the cruise.

The one rule I don't bend: fly in the day before your cruise. Allegiant often flies a route only a few days a week, so if your flight is delayed or canceled there may not be another one the next morning. With only one or two flights a week, a "day before" plan sometimes becomes "two days before," and that's fine. A night by the beach is part of the vacation.

If you're torn between a cruise and a resort, see Caribbean cruise vs. all-inclusive resort, or start with my Caribbean cruise planning. And if Orlando's theme parks are part of the plan, my Disney and Universal planning page covers what spring break crowds really look like, and my Universal Orlando guide for Midwest families goes deeper on Universal.

When is O'Hare the better backup?

Use O'Hare when RFD has no flight on your dates, your destination isn't on the RFD list, or the charter you wanted is sold out. Places like Aruba, Jamaica, Hawaii and spring break cruises out of Miami all start at O'Hare for Rockford families.

What changed this fall: the American Airlines / Landline bus connection from RFD to O'Hare ended October 4, 2026, and no direct replacement has been announced (Rock River Current). That means getting to O'Hare is back to the familiar options:

  • Drive and park. About 75–90 minutes each way on a good day. Budget for a week of economy parking.
  • Van Galder bus. The Rockford terminal on Walton Street runs 19 trips a day to O'Hare after an August 2026 expansion. Online fares start at $28.20 one way plus fees (Coach USA Van Galder).
  • Ride or shuttle. Practical for early-morning flights when the bus timing doesn't work.

For a full breakdown, see my Rockford to O'Hare after Landline guide. I always price an RFD option and an O'Hare option side by side. Sometimes a cheaper O'Hare fare is worth the drive, and sometimes it isn't once you add parking, an earlier wake-up and a tired family on the way home.

How I help Rockford families plan spring break

Spring break is the week I worry about most for my clients, because the dates are fixed, everyone wants them, and RFD's charters have a firm end date. I'd rather help you book in October than try to find something in February.

When you call me, I check the actual charter calendar against your school's break, compare a package from RFD with the same trip from O'Hare, and tell you plainly which one makes sense. I match resorts to your family: kids' clubs, suites with a door that closes, quiet pools, short transfers. As an IBCCES Certified Autism Travel Professional and a mom of two autistic kids, I also plan for the things that make or break a trip for neurodivergent families, like a calm airport (RFD is a big plus here), predictable routines and a resort that won't overwhelm anyone. You can read more about that on my autism travel planning and all-inclusive resort planning pages.

If a cruise is the better fit, I've been named Royal Caribbean Partner of the Year twice, and I'll help you build the flight-hotel-ship plan from RFD. My planning is free to you; I'm paid by the suppliers. See how I plan family vacations.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rockford airport have international flights for spring break?

Yes. For 2027, RFD has seasonal Apple Vacations charters to Cancún (Mon/Wed/Sat), Punta Cana (mostly Tue/Thu/Sun) and Liberia, Costa Rica (Fridays). They run from late January to early April and can be booked as a package or flight only.

Is Huatulco still flying from Rockford?

No. Huatulco flew from RFD in 2026 but is not on the 2027 schedule. Liberia, Costa Rica is the new destination for 2027.

Can I book just the flight on an RFD charter?

Yes. Apple Vacations, Funjet and Travel Impressions sell flight-only seats as well as packages. Package pricing is often competitive, though, so it's worth comparing both.

What's the cheapest spring break option from Rockford?

It's usually an Allegiant flight to Florida booked early, with a condo or hotel. For an all-inclusive week, the charter package is often competitive with O'Hare once you add parking, transfers and time. I'm happy to price both for your dates.

What if RFD's charters are sold out for our week?

Look at the next-closest charter day, switch destinations (Punta Cana instead of Cancún, for example), or fly from O'Hare. With the Landline bus gone, that means driving, Van Galder or a shuttle.

Do RFD charters fly after Easter?

Barely. The last Cancún departure is March 31, 2027, and all three charter seasons end by April 5. If your break is in mid-April, plan on Allegiant or O'Hare.

Spring break 2027 is closer than it looks, and the RFD charter weeks around Easter will fill. If you'd like me to check what's still open for your school's dates, call or text me at (815) 904-9755, or send a note through the contact form at magicbeantravel.com. Tell me your district, how many travelers and what kind of trip you have in mind, and I'll come back with real options from RFD and O'Hare.
