The short answer: starting February 5, 2027, you can fly nonstop from Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) to Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) on a new weekly Friday flight sold by Apple Vacations and its sister brands. Because the flight only goes once a week, nearly every trip will be a 7-night stay, Friday to Friday (14 nights is also listed). Liberia is the gateway to Guanacaste, Costa Rica's dry, sunny Pacific coast. That's where most of the country's family all-inclusive resorts are, many within 30 to 60 minutes of the airport.
Is there a direct flight from Rockford to Costa Rica?
Yes. For 2027, RFD added a seasonal nonstop to Liberia, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It runs Fridays only, from February 5 through April 2, 2027, alongside the returning Cancún and Punta Cana flights (Rock River Current; WIFR / Rockford News First).
Here's what I know so far:
| Detail | What's published |
|---|---|
| Route | RFD → Liberia (LIR), Guanacaste |
| Days | Fridays only |
| Season | Feb 5 – Apr 2, 2027. Apple's schedule lists outbound departures every Friday from Feb 5 through Mar 26 |
| Stay lengths | 7 or 14 nights listed (Apple Vacations RFD schedule PDF) |
| Sold by | Apple Vacations, Funjet Vacations, Travel Impressions. Air-only or full package |
| Aircraft | Boeing 737-800, up to 189 seats, per Costa Rican press (El Financiero) |
| Airline | Apple's schedule lists its RFD public charters under GlobalX; Costa Rican press reports TUI Airways will operate this route. Your booking will show the operating carrier |
| Checked bag | First bag $40 per flight if prepaid, or $90 round trip at the airport, unless your fare includes one (per Apple's schedule PDF) |
If you followed the RFD charters in past years, you'll notice a change. Huatulco, Mexico isn't on the 2027 schedule. Costa Rica is back in its place. Costa Rica actually flew from RFD before Huatulco replaced it for the 2026 season (Rock River Current, 2025). I walk through the full RFD lineup, including Allegiant's domestic routes, in my Rockford direct flights guide.
When should we go: which 2027 Friday works best?
For most Stateline families, the best week is whichever one fits your school calendar. Late March is the obvious pick for spring break. Weather barely changes across the season, so the calendar should decide.
A few things to know as you choose:
- Spring break overlap. As of October 2026, unofficial calendar sites list Rockford Public Schools' spring break as March 29–April 2, 2027, with Good Friday (March 26) off. Check the RPS 205 calendar before you book, since dates can change. If that holds, the final Friday departure (March 26) brings you home April 2 without missing a school day. That week will sell first.
- February is quieter. The early-February weeks are usually the least crowded and can be cheaper. They're a good fit for retirees, homeschoolers and anyone with flexible work.
- Time zone. Costa Rica stays on Central Standard Time all year and doesn't observe daylight saving time. Until March 14, 2027, it's the same time as Rockford. After that, it's one hour behind. For kids who need a steady bedtime, that's about as easy as international travel gets.
- Book early. One flight a week with roughly 189 seats is not much inventory. Once the spring-break Friday is full, your fallback is connecting through O'Hare.
I've also put together a full comparison of every spring break 2027 option from RFD: Spring break 2027 from Rockford: every nonstop and charter option.
What's the weather like in Guanacaste from February to April?
February through April is the heart of Guanacaste's dry season. Expect hot, sunny days, almost no rain and very little humidity compared with Costa Rica's rainforest regions. Average daytime highs in Liberia run in the mid-90s °F in February, March and April, according to Costa Rica's national weather institute (IMN).
What that means for packing and planning:
- Sun is the main hazard. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, rash guards and hats, and plan shade breaks in the middle of the day.
- It can be windy. Seasonal winds (called the Papagayo winds) blow hardest from about December through March. Breezy afternoons feel good, but they can make some beaches choppier and can cancel boat trips.
- The landscape is brown. Guanacaste is a tropical dry forest. In March it looks more like late-summer prairie than jungle. If your kids picture green rainforest, show them photos ahead of time so they know what to expect.
- No sargassum. The seaweed that has hit Cancún and Punta Cana hard comes from the Atlantic side. Guanacaste is on the Pacific, so it isn't part of that problem. For families who've had a seaweed week in Mexico, that matters.
Papagayo vs. Tamarindo vs. Playas del Coco: where should we stay?
Choose Papagayo or the Matapalo/El Coco area if you want the shortest transfer and the most resort choice. Choose the Playa Conchal/Tamarindo area if you want a livelier beach town or a specific resort like the Westin, and don't mind an hour or more in the van.
| Area | Approx. transfer from LIR | Feels like | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Papagayo Peninsula and Gulf of Papagayo | ~25–50 min | Gated, upscale, quiet, calm bays | Families who want resort time and a short ride |
| Playa Matapalo / Playa Hermosa / Playas del Coco | ~25–40 min | Busier, more value-priced, local town nearby in Coco | Budget-minded families, big resorts with water parks |
| Playa Conchal / Flamingo | ~1 hour | Spread-out resort area, beautiful shell-sand beach | Families who want space and a golf-resort feel |
| Tamarindo | ~1 hr 15 min – 1 hr 30 min | Surf town with restaurants and nightlife | Teens, surfers, families who want to leave the resort |
| Playa El Jobo / Salinas Bay (far north) | ~1.5–2 hours depending on traffic | Remote, sheltered cove | Families who don't mind a long ride for seclusion |
A practical note on Tamarindo: it's a great town, but it's mostly smaller hotels and boutique stays rather than big family all-inclusives. Many families who say "Tamarindo" end up at a resort near Conchal and take a day trip into town.
Papagayo vs. Tamarindo in one line: Papagayo is about the resort. Tamarindo is about the town.
Which Guanacaste all-inclusives work best for families?
Guanacaste has fewer all-inclusives than Cancún or Punta Cana, so the choice comes down to a handful of resorts. These are the ones I'd look at first for families. Kids' club ages, perks and promotions change often, so I confirm them at booking.
- Riu Guanacaste and Riu Palace Costa Rica (Playa Matapalo). These two sister resorts sit side by side, about 35 minutes from LIR. They have the RiuLand kids' club (ages 4–12) and Riu Splash Water World with slides, free for guests (Vacation Express). They're big, busy and good value, the closest thing to a Cancún-style family resort.
- Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa. In the Papagayo area, a short ride from the airport. It has long been marketed to families as an all-inclusive with a kids' club and family suites. Before I quote it, I confirm the current all-inclusive plan, kids' club details and room types with the resort.
- Planet Hollywood Costa Rica by Royalton, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort (Playa Manzanillo, Gulf of Papagayo). Roughly 45–50 minutes from LIR. It's an all-suites resort with a free kids' club and a splash zone for kids, and Marriott's booking page allows up to 8 guests in a room (Marriott). Marriott lists elevators and accessible rooms with roll-in showers, but at least one booking site says the property has no elevators, so if you're bringing a stroller or a wheelchair user, I confirm the room location with the resort before booking.
- The Westin Reserva Conchal (Playa Conchal). An all-inclusive golf resort about an hour from LIR. It has a free Westin Kids Club, a kids' pool and a spread-out, calmer layout (Marriott). The longer ride buys a quieter feel and one of the prettiest beaches in the region.
- JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa (Playa El Jobo). This is the former Dreams Las Mareas, rebuilt and reopened in fall 2026 as JW Marriott's first all-inclusive. It sits on a sheltered cove far to the north and has a Family by JW kids' club and 17 pools (Hotel Online). The transfer is the trade-off: about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic (Enter Costa Rica).
What is there to do besides the beach?
Guanacaste is easy to love because it combines resort days with real adventure, and most of it is within an hour or so of the Papagayo and Coco resorts. I usually suggest one or two excursion days in a 7-night stay, not five.
- Rincón de la Vieja National Park. Boiling mud pots, steam vents and a waterfall hike on an active volcano. The Las Pailas loop is a fairly flat 2.2 miles. As of spring 2026, tickets had to be bought online in advance through SINAC and the Las Pailas sector was closed Mondays; check fees and hours before you go. It's roughly 1 hr 20 min from Playas del Coco or 1.5 hours from Conchal (Vamos Rent-A-Car guide).
- Zip lines and adventure ranches. Several outfitters near Rincón de la Vieja and the coast combine zip lines, horseback riding, tubing and hot springs in one day. Many tours set minimum ages that vary by activity, so check those before you promise anything to the kids.
- Wildlife. Howler monkeys, iguanas, coatis and plenty of birds show up around many resorts on their own. A river "safari float" is a gentle, seated way for younger kids to see crocodiles and birds.
- On the water. Snorkeling and catamaran trips run out of Coco, Flamingo and Papagayo, weather permitting (remember those winds).
A safety note on swimming: the U.S. State Department warns that rip currents cause drownings in Costa Rica every year. Swim where lifeguards are present, and never alone or after drinking (State Department). Resort pools and the sheltered Papagayo bays are your friends with little ones.
What do U.S. citizens need to enter Costa Rica?
U.S. citizens need a valid passport book (not a passport card) and a return ticket, and no visa for a vacation. Costa Rica's $29 departure tax is included in most airline tickets.
Your checklist:
- Passport. The State Department says it must be valid for your entire stay, and that immigration may deny entry if the passport is damaged (State Department). I recommend at least six months of validity anyway, so you're never at the mercy of an airline agent's interpretation. Kids' passports are valid for only five years, so check those first.
- No visa for tourist stays under 180 days for U.S. citizens, though immigration decides how long you're allowed to stay.
- Proof of onward travel. Your charter return covers this.
- Departure tax. $29 from LIR. Most airlines include it in the ticket. If not, you pay it at a counter before check-in (Enter Costa Rica). I'll confirm whether it's included on the RFD charter when you book.
- Children with Costa Rican citizenship (including kids born in Costa Rica) need an exit permit from Costa Rican immigration. That rule is strictly enforced. If you're a single parent or grandparent traveling with kids, I also suggest bringing a notarized consent letter from the other parent.
- Vaccines. No special vaccines are required coming from the U.S. (the yellow fever rule applies only if you're arriving from certain South American or African countries). Stay current on routine shots.
If anyone in your family doesn't have a passport yet, apply now. My local guide covers it: Getting a passport in Rockford, Loves Park and Belvidere.
Is Costa Rica safe for families?
For the resort-and-excursion trip most Rockford families will take, yes. The usual precautions apply. The State Department rates Costa Rica Level 2, "Exercise increased caution," because of crime (issued April 2, 2026). That's the same level as many popular beach destinations.
What that looks like in practice:
- Petty theft is the most common problem. Never leave bags on the beach or in a rental car.
- Don't walk alone on dark streets or beaches at night.
- Use your resort's transfer or a reputable tour company rather than flagging rides.
- Take water and adventure safety seriously: rip currents, river crossings and heat are the bigger everyday risks for families.
Travel insurance is worth it on a charter trip, especially with a once-a-week flight. If something goes wrong, the next flight home could be seven days away. I explain the options in my travel insurance guide.
How much does a Costa Rica all-inclusive from Rockford cost?
Expect Guanacaste to cost more than a comparable Cancún or Punta Cana week. There are fewer resorts and only one flight a week. In exchange, you skip O'Hare and get a very different, more nature-focused trip.
I don't want to make up numbers. Apple Vacations prices move weekly, and this is a brand-new route. Here's what affects your total:
- The week. Spring break Fridays cost the most. Early February costs the least.
- The resort tier. Riu is the value end. Westin, Hilton, Planet Hollywood and the JW Marriott are mid-to-upper.
- Room type. Families of five often need a family suite or two rooms, and that's the biggest jump.
- Bags. $40 per bag per flight if prepaid, unless your fare includes one.
- Excursions. Budget separately for one or two big tour days, plus gratuities.
Costa Rica vs. Cancún vs. Punta Cana: which charter is right for us?
Choose Costa Rica if your family wants wildlife and adventure with a resort base, and no sargassum worries. Choose Cancún or Punta Cana if you want the most resort choice, more flight days and the lowest price.
| Liberia, Costa Rica | Cancún | Punta Cana | |
|---|---|---|---|
| RFD flight days (2027) | Fridays only | Mon / Wed / Sat | Tue / Thu / Sun |
| Season | Feb 5 – Apr 2 | Jan 23 – Apr 5 | Jan 24 – Apr 1 |
| Resort choice | Limited (a handful of major family all-inclusives) | Huge | Huge |
| Typical price | Higher | Wide range | Strong value |
| Sargassum | Not a factor (Pacific) | Possible | Possible |
| Beyond the resort | Volcanoes, wildlife, zip lines | Cenotes, ruins, parks | Mostly beach and water |
| Time zone vs. Rockford | Same, then 1 hr behind after Mar 14 | 1 hr ahead in winter | 2 hrs ahead in winter |

Is Costa Rica a good fit for autistic or sensory-sensitive kids?
It can be a great fit if you pick the resort carefully. For many kids, the deciding factor is the transfer, not the resort.
What I look at for sensory-sensitive families:
- Transfer length. After an early wake-up and a long international flight, a 30-minute ride to Papagayo or Matapalo is a very different day than a 1.5- to 2-hour ride to El Jobo. If your child struggles with car time or motion sickness, I keep the transfer under 45 minutes. I also book a private transfer so you aren't waiting for a shared shuttle to fill.
- Resort size and noise. Big resorts with water parks are fun, but the pool deck can be loud. Smaller or more spread-out properties tend to be calmer. I'll ask for a room away from the main pool, the theater and the lobby bar.
- Nature sounds. Howler monkeys are loud, especially at dawn. For some kids that's the highlight of the trip. For others it's a 5 a.m. meltdown. Play a video of their call before you go, and pack noise-canceling headphones.
- Predictability. The Friday-to-Friday schedule makes it easy to build a visual countdown and a day-by-day plan.
- Excursions. Pick one low-demand outing, like a river float or a short Rincón loop, instead of a packed adventure day. Check minimum ages and the length of the drive.
More of my approach is in Traveling with two kids on the spectrum and on my autism travel planning page.
How I help with Costa Rica trips from RFD
I book Apple Vacations packages for Rockford and Stateline families, and my planning is free to you because the travel suppliers pay me. With a once-a-week flight, the details really matter. I watch for the spring-break Friday to open, match your family to the right beach area and resort, and confirm the things that change: kids' club ages, family-suite occupancy, bag allowances and whether the departure tax is included.
As an IBCCES Certified Autism Travel Professional and a mom of two autistic kids, I also plan around the things that make or break a trip for sensory-sensitive families. That means a short private transfer, a quiet room location and one well-chosen excursion instead of five. If the charter week doesn't work for you, I'll price the O'Hare alternative honestly so you can compare. Learn more on my all-inclusive planning page or my family vacation planning page.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a nonstop flight from Rockford to Costa Rica?
Yes, for 2027. A weekly Friday nonstop from RFD to Liberia (LIR) runs February 5 through April 2, 2027, sold through Apple Vacations, Funjet and Travel Impressions.
Can I book just the flight, without a resort?
Yes. The RFD flights are sold as air-only or as full packages. Packages are often the better value, and they protect you if the schedule changes.
How long is the drive from Liberia airport to the resorts?
About 25–50 minutes to Papagayo, Matapalo and Playas del Coco, about an hour to Playa Conchal, and longer to Tamarindo (about 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 30 min) and the far-north resorts (about 1.5 to 2 hours).
Do kids need passports for Costa Rica?
Yes. Every traveler, including babies, needs their own passport book. A passport card isn't accepted for international flights.
Is the Costa Rica exit fee included?
The $29 departure tax from Liberia is usually built into airline tickets. I'll confirm it for the RFD flight when you book.
Does Guanacaste get seaweed like Cancún?
No. The sargassum that affects Mexico's Caribbean coast and the Dominican Republic is an Atlantic issue. Guanacaste is on the Pacific.
