The best family all-inclusives you can reach on the Rockford (RFD) charters are the ones that match your kids' ages and needs, not the ones with the biggest name. For toddlers I look first at Club Med Punta Cana and Dreams Playa Mujeres. Tweens and teens usually do best at Moon Palace The Grand, Hotel Xcaret Mexico or Hard Rock Punta Cana. For autistic and sensory-sensitive kids, I start with the two Nickelodeon resorts, because they have the most formal autism programs on these routes. Below I go through each family type, with a comparison table and the charter days that shape which trip lengths work.
When do the 2027 RFD charters to Cancún and Punta Cana fly?
Cancún flights leave Rockford on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and Punta Cana flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, from late January through early April 2027. They're nonstop public charters on GlobalX, sold through Apple Vacations, Funjet Vacations and Travel Impressions as air-only or as a full package (Rock River Current; Funjet RFD 2027 schedule).
The details matter more for families than for couples, because your trip length depends on which days the plane flies:
| Cancún (CUN) | Punta Cana (PUJ) | |
|---|---|---|
| Season | Jan 23 – Apr 5, 2027 | Jan 24 – Apr 1, 2027 |
| First flight | Sat, Jan 23 (7, 11 or 14 nights) | Sun, Jan 24 (7, 11 or 14 nights) |
| Regular departure days | Mon / Wed / Sat, Jan 30 – Mar 31 | Thu / Sun Jan 31 – Feb 14; Tue / Thu / Sun Feb 18 – Mar 23; Thu / Sun Mar 25–28 |
| Trip lengths offered | 2 to 14 nights | 2 to 14 nights (fewer choices early and late in the season) |
Source: the Funjet schedule dated May 19, 2026. It notes that "all durations may not be available" and that schedules can change, so I confirm against live Apple/Funjet inventory when I quote your trip.
What this means in practice:
- A week in Cancún is usually Saturday to Saturday, or Wednesday to Wednesday.
- A long weekend works well to Punta Cana: Thursday to Sunday (3 nights) or Sunday to Thursday (4 nights).
- Spring break: RPS 205's spring break is March 29 – April 2, 2027, and Good Friday, March 26, is also a day off (RPS 205 calendar). Cancún has a Saturday, March 27 departure, and the last Punta Cana departure is Sunday, March 28. The last Punta Cana return is April 1, so the end of spring break week is tight there. Those seats will go first.
- Bags: GlobalX includes a carry-on. The first checked bag is $40 each way if you prepay at least 3 days before departure, or $90 round trip if you pay at the airport, unless you buy the Preferred Perks Plus or Premium Class upgrade (Funjet RFD schedule). Families packing car seats, swim diapers and a week of sunscreen should budget for it.
The charters run while kids are in school, not over Christmas, so most local families travel on the long February weekends or at spring break. I go over every nonstop out of Rockford in Rockford direct flights from RFD, and spring break gets its own piece: Spring break 2027 from Rockford: every nonstop and charter option.

Kids-club ages and amenities come from resort and tour-operator listings, including Costco Travel, Club Med, Hard Rock and Momtrends for Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana. Resorts change these programs, so I confirm them when I book.
A note on brands: I'm not trying to crown Hyatt over Dreams or Barceló over Iberostar. Points blogs do plenty of that. Your kids' ages and your family's needs narrow the list faster than the brand does. (If you're traveling as adults only, see Sandals vs. Secrets vs. Excellence.)
What's the best all-inclusive for toddlers and babies?
For babies and toddlers, Club Med Punta Cana and Dreams Playa Mujeres are my first two calls. Club Med is one of the few brands with organized care starting at 4 months, and Dreams' Explorer's Club takes kids from age 3, a year younger than most clubs.
Club Med Punta Cana has the shortest transfer on either route, about 10–15 minutes from the airport. That's a big deal when a toddler has been in a car seat since 5 a.m. Baby Club Med (4–23 months) and Petit Club Med (2–3 years) cost extra. Mini Club Med (4–10) is included, and Club Med says the stay includes circus activities like the flying trapeze (Club Med; Club Med Punta Cana). The resort's aqua park is Club Med's newest and largest, with about 20 family-friendly attractions. Ask whether airport transfers are included in your package; it depends on how the trip is booked, so I check it when I price yours.
Dreams Playa Mujeres in Costa Mujeres takes kids from age 3 at the Explorer's Club and has a mini water park right at the club (Costco Travel). Costa Mujeres is north of the Hotel Zone and generally calmer. The tradeoff is a transfer of about 45 minutes.
Questions I ask toddler families:
- Does your child nap? A shorter transfer and a room near the kids pool beat a fancy restaurant.
- Is your child potty-trained? Most clubs that start at 3 or 4 require it. Ask before you count on drop-off time.
- Do you need a crib, bed rails or a bottle warmer? I request these in writing ahead of time.
Which resorts work best for tweens (8–12)?
Tweens are happiest where there's something to do besides the kids club, which many of them think they've outgrown by 10. Hyatt Ziva Cancún and Hotel Xcaret Mexico are my usual picks for this age.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún sits at Punta Cancún, the point of the Hotel Zone, about 25 minutes from the airport. The KidZ Club runs ages 4–12, and there's a teen lounge for when your 11-year-old decides they're too cool for crafts (Costco Travel). It's also easy to get from there to ferries and excursions, which keeps a curious tween busy. One detail: swim-up rooms there are 13 and up.
Hotel Xcaret Mexico is a different kind of trip. The "All-Fun Inclusive" rate covers round-trip airport transportation and unlimited access to the Xcaret parks, including Xcaret, Xel-Há and Xplor, with shuttles between them (Hoteles Xcaret; Costco Travel). Club Xiquillos takes ages 4–12. For a family that would otherwise buy park tickets day by day, the math often works out. The transfer is about an hour, and some parks require reservations.
What's the best all-inclusive for teenagers?
Teenagers want things that feel like their own: a water park with real thrills, a hangout without little kids, and some freedom. Moon Palace The Grand and Hard Rock Punta Cana do this best on the charter routes, and Barceló Bávaro Palace is a good budget option.
Moon Palace The Grand is close to the Cancún airport and has a water park with a FlowRider, slides, a lazy river and a wave pool. It also has the Wired teen arcade lounge, and the family suites connect two rooms (destination2). Teens get space, and parents still get a door that closes.
Hard Rock Punta Cana in Macao has the Rockaway Bay water park, a lazy river, and the Nicklaus-designed Hard Rock Golf Club at Cana Bay (Costco Travel). The Roxity Kids Club tops out at 12, but teens 13–17 get their own gaming room with PS5 stations and a lounge inside the club (Hard Rock). It's a big, busy resort, which some teens love.
Barceló Bávaro Palace has a dedicated teens' club for ages 13–17 called Xone, which is unusual at its price point (Costco Travel).
Which resorts suit multigenerational trips with grandparents?
For multigenerational groups, the transfer length, room layout and number of restaurants matter more than the water slides. Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, Moon Palace The Grand and Dreams Playa Mujeres handle mixed-age groups well.
- Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana is about 15 minutes from the Punta Cana airport and has the Canapolis water park, a lazy river and slides (Costco Travel). A short ride makes a real difference for Grandpa's knees and a toddler's patience.
- Moon Palace The Grand has connecting family suites, and it's close to the airport.
- Dreams Playa Mujeres has kids and teen clubs from ages 3 to 17 and a calmer beach area. That makes it easy for the grandparents to read by the pool while the cousins are busy.
- Hard Rock Punta Cana works when one generation is there for the golf.
For groups, I compare a few things side by side: connecting-room availability, walking distances (some resorts are spread out and need trams or golf carts), and whether one wing can be booked as an adults-only or club-level upgrade for the grandparents. If the group is 8+ rooms, see group travel planning.
Which Cancún and Punta Cana resorts are autism-certified or sensory-friendly?
As of October 2026, the only current IBCCES Certified Autism Center I could confirm on these routes is a water park, Aqua Nick Riviera Maya, inside Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya. It earned the designation in September 2026 (IBCCES). Grand Palladium Bávaro in Punta Cana was certified back in 2018 (Autism Travel), but I couldn't confirm it's still current, so ask before you count on it. Several Karisma and Lomas resorts carry a different credential, Autism Double-Checked.
The two are easy to mix up:
- IBCCES Certified Autism Center (CAC): at least 80% of guest-facing staff complete autism and sensory training, and IBCCES does an onsite review that produces sensory guides. It's the same organization that certifies me as a travel professional (mine is the CATP). The kids camps at Beaches Turks & Caicos and Beaches Negril are Advanced Certified Autism Centers (Beaches), but neither resort is on the RFD charters.
- Autism Double-Checked (ADC): a separate company that reviews accommodations, guest touchpoints and staff training. Karisma lists Nickelodeon Riviera Maya, Nickelodeon Punta Cana and Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Cancún as ADC-certified, and says it was the first hotel group to offer an Autism Concierge. Lomas properties in the Riviera Maya (El Dorado and Generations) also operate under the Autism Double-Checked framework, according to this roundup. Many El Dorado resorts are adults-only, so check before you fall in love with one.
You may see Nickelodeon Punta Cana described as a "Certified Autism Center" on some booking sites. Karisma, which runs the resort, lists it under Autism Double-Checked, and both Karisma and IBCCES say the CAC designation is exclusive to Aqua Nick Riviera Maya.
Here's what I actually look for for kids like mine, certified or not:
- A short transfer. Nickelodeon Riviera Maya is about 30 minutes. Nickelodeon Punta Cana is closer to 45.
- Quiet escape spots. Ask where the low-traffic pool is and when the main pool's music starts.
- Predictable food. A buffet you can preview by photo, plus a way to request plain pasta every night without negotiating.
- Room location. Away from the theater, the lobby bar and the foam party.
- Pre-arrival photos and maps for a social story or visual schedule.
My full approach is in Traveling with two kids on the spectrum and on my autism travel planning page. For a broader look at certified properties, see IBCCES-certified hotels and destinations.
What's the best budget-friendly family all-inclusive?
On a budget, Punta Cana usually stretches the money furthest, and Barceló Bávaro Palace is my go-to there. On the Mexico side, I look at Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo.
Barceló Bávaro Palace has a Family Room with two connecting rooms (a king, two doubles and a sofa bed) and a split-level Family Duplex with two bathrooms (Costco Travel). The Barcy water park is free. Pirates Island water park costs extra unless you book Premium Level. For a family of five or six, getting everyone in one booking without buying two full rooms is often where the savings are.
Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo runs Star Camp for ages 4–15 in three age groups, plus Lucy's Kids Club (Vacation Express). It doesn't have a big water park, but the kids programming and the Iberostar brand are consistent. It's about 45 minutes from the Cancún airport.
Budget tips specific to the charters:
- Package beats piecing together. Apple/Funjet charter seats are usually cheapest bundled with the hotel.
- Shorter stays on the off days. A Sunday-to-Thursday in Punta Cana can cost much less than a full week over spring break.
- Count the bag fees. Checked bags on GlobalX cost extra unless you upgrade, and prepaying is cheaper than paying at the airport.
- Insurance on a charter is a different conversation than on a major airline, because there's no next flight out if yours cancels. See my travel insurance guide.
Should we pick Cancún or Punta Cana for a family trip?
Pick Cancún if you want more resort choice, shorter flights for some schedules and lots of excursions. Pick Punta Cana if you want the most beach and resort for your money and calmer days at the resort. Both get you to the beach the same day from Rockford.
A few family-specific differences:
- Excursions: Cancún and the Riviera Maya have cenotes, ruins, Xcaret parks and ferries. Punta Cana trips are mostly resort-based.
- Arrival paperwork: the Dominican Republic uses an online e-ticket for entry and exit. I walk families through it, and there's more in my Punta Cana resort areas guide for the RFD charter.
- Seaweed: winter is historically the lighter sargassum season, but 2026 was the second-biggest sargassum year on record, after 2025, and nobody has a reliable 2027 forecast yet (USF; howisthesargassum.com). I track it for charter dates in Sargassum and your RFD charter dates.
- Safety questions: these come up for Mexico more than anything else. My honest answer is in Is Cancún safe for families?
For a deeper comparison, see Mexico vs. Dominican Republic vs. Jamaica. And if you're torn between a resort and a ship, I lay that out in Caribbean cruise vs. all-inclusive resort.
How I help families choose
I'm a mom of two autistic kids and an IBCCES Certified Autism Travel Professional. When I plan a family all-inclusive, I start with your kids, not a brochure: who naps, who melts down in loud dining rooms, who wants a FlowRider, and who will be calling the shots in the lazy river.
From there I:
- Match your charter dates to resorts and room types that actually have availability (family suites and connecting rooms sell out first).
- Confirm kids club ages, potty-training rules and teen club hours with the resort, since these change.
- Request room location, cribs, and dietary or sensory accommodations in writing before you leave Rockford.
- Prep the Dominican Republic e-ticket and Mexico entry details, and help you decide on insurance.
- Stay reachable if a charter delay or a resort issue comes up while you're there.
Planning is free to you. Resorts and tour operators pay me, so you don't pay more for having an advisor. You can see more on my all-inclusive resort planning and family vacation planning pages, or read my broader all-inclusive resorts from Rockford guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book just the RFD charter flight without a hotel?
Yes. Apple Vacations, Funjet and Travel Impressions sell the 2027 RFD charters as air-only or as packages. Packages are often the better value, and I can price both.
What age do kids clubs start at Cancún and Punta Cana resorts?
Most start at age 4. Dreams Playa Mujeres and Barceló Bávaro Palace take kids from 3. Club Med Punta Cana has paid care from 4 months.
Is there an IBCCES-certified autism resort on the RFD charters?
As of October 2026, the confirmed IBCCES Certified Autism Center on these routes is the Aqua Nick water park at Nickelodeon Riviera Maya. Both Nickelodeon resorts and some other Karisma and Lomas resorts carry Autism Double-Checked certification instead.
How long is the drive from the airport to the resort?
It ranges from about 10–15 minutes (Club Med Punta Cana, Moon Palace The Grand, Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana) to about an hour (Hotel Xcaret Mexico). With young or sensory-sensitive kids, a short transfer is worth a lot.
Do kids stay free at family all-inclusives?
Sometimes. As of October 2026, Club Med is advertising a kids-under-4-stay-free offer (conditions apply), and other resorts run kids-stay promotions at certain times of year. They come and go, so I check current offers for your dates.
What's the best week to fly the charter for a family?
For school-age kids, the long February weekends and spring break are the obvious ones, and they sell first. If you can pull the kids for a few days, late January and early March often have better prices and more room choices.
