Rockford to Fort Lauderdale: The Allegiant Nonstop, Family Beaches and Port Everglades Cruises

Allegiant flies RFD to Fort Lauderdale nonstop. Flight days, bag fees, the 10-minute ride to Port Everglades, family beaches and a sample fly-cruise plan.

Caribbean cruise ship in turquoise water

Yes, you can fly nonstop from Rockford to Fort Lauderdale. Allegiant started the RFD–FLL route on February 12, 2026, and as of October 2026 it flies about twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, in roughly three hours. Fort Lauderdale's airport is about 10 minutes from Port Everglades, one of Florida's busiest cruise ports, so this is the simplest fly-and-cruise trip Rockford families have ever had. It's also a solid beach destination on its own.

Is there a direct flight from Rockford to Fort Lauderdale?

Yes. Allegiant flies nonstop from Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) to Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International (FLL), and the flight takes about 3 hours. The route launched February 12, 2026 (Rockford News First/WIFR) and is still listed on both RFD's destinations page and Allegiant's Rockford page as of mid-October 2026.

Here's what the schedule looks like right now:

Detail What I'm seeing (October 2026)
Airline Allegiant (Boeing 737 MAX 8, 190 seats, all economy)
How often About 2 flights a week
Days Thursday and Sunday, departing RFD mid-morning
Return flights Thursday and Sunday, departing FLL early morning
Flight time About 3 hours 5 minutes, 1,230 miles
Schedule loaded through Mid-May 2027
Summer 2027 Not on sale yet

The day pattern and times come from FlightsFrom's RFD–FLL page, which pulls schedule data, not from Allegiant itself. Allegiant adjusts days by season, and some of its RFD routes take breaks in the slow months. Always check the actual dates you want on allegiantair.com before you build anything around them.

The important part for planning: with only two flights a week, you build the trip around the flight days, not the other way around. More on that in the cruise section.

How much does Allegiant from Rockford to Fort Lauderdale cost?

Base fares are often low, sometimes under $50 one way, but Allegiant charges separately for carry-on bags, checked bags and seat assignments, so price the whole trip, not just the ticket. When the route launched, one-way fares started as low as $69 (Rockford News First). In mid-October 2026, Allegiant's own page showed a one-way FLL–RFD fare from $44 for a late-October date (Allegiant). Holiday and spring break dates cost more.

Allegiant's optional services and fees page lists:

  • Personal item: free, up to 8 x 14 x 18 inches, must fit under the seat.
  • Carry-on bag: $10 to $75 each way, depending on route and when you add it.
  • Checked bags: up to 50 lbs, priced by route and per flight segment. Allegiant doesn't publish one flat price, so check its fee calculator for your RFD–FLL dates.
  • Overweight bags: $50 extra for 51–70 lbs, $75 for 71–100 lbs.
  • Seat selection: $0 to $80.

My practical advice:

  • Add bags when you book. Allegiant is clear that prepaying saves money, and bag fees at the airport are the most expensive version.
  • Cruise families need a checked bag. A week of formal-night clothes, swimsuits, sunscreen and comfort items doesn't fit in a personal item. Budget for at least one checked bag per two people.
  • Pay for seats if your kids need to sit with you. For a three-hour flight with a child who needs a parent next to them, the seat fee is worth it.

Even with the extras, a family of four flying RFD–FLL usually comes out ahead of O'Hare once you add O'Hare parking, gas and the drive time. That's the same math I walk through in my guide to direct flights from Rockford.

How far is Fort Lauderdale airport from Port Everglades?

Very close. FLL and Port Everglades sit next to each other, and the drive is usually about 10 minutes. The port calls the airport "just minutes away" and puts the average taxi fare at $18 to $21 (Port Everglades: Getting Here).

Your options from the airport to the ship:

  • Taxi or rideshare. The easiest choice for most families.
  • Cruise line transfers. Many cruise bookings can add an airport or hotel transfer. I'll tell you whether it's worth the price for your group.
  • Hotel shuttles. Some Fort Lauderdale hotels run cruise shuttles. Ask before booking.
  • Rental cars. You can rent at FLL's Rental Car Center, and some rental companies run shuttles from the cruise terminals.

For comparison, if you fly from O'Hare to Orlando for a Port Canaveral cruise, the ride from the airport to the port is about an hour. Fort Lauderdale is the shortest airport-to-ship transfer of any big Florida cruise port I plan for. For a full breakdown of drive-to versus fly-to ports, see my guide to the Closest Cruise Ports to Chicago and Rockford.

Which cruise lines sail from Port Everglades?

Port Everglades hosts Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, Disney, Viking, Silversea, Crystal, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and the Baleària ferry to the Bahamas. That's the list on the port's own cruise lines page as of October 2026. Carnival, MSC and Norwegian aren't on that list right now, so if one of those lines is a must for you, ask me and I'll check which Florida port it sails from for your dates.

Here are the ships I'd look at first for families:

Cruise line Ship(s) at Port Everglades Good fit for
Royal Caribbean Legend of the Seas (Icon class), from November 2026, 6–8 night Caribbean and Bahamas; returns for winter 2027–28 Families who want water slides, big pools and Perfect Day at CocoCay
Disney Cruise Line Disney Dream and Disney Destiny, winter 2026–27; Destiny also summer 2027; the new Disney Believe from December 2027 Disney fans, younger kids, shorter 3–5 night trips
Princess Star Princess and Sun Princess (2025–26 season); Regal Princess (summer 2026) Multigenerational trips, quieter pace
Celebrity Celebrity Xcel (2025–26 season); Celebrity Reflection (summer 2026) Couples, older kids, food lovers
Holland America, Viking, Silversea, Crystal Seasonal Adults and longer itineraries

Sources: Cruise Industry News on Legend of the Seas, Cruise Industry News on Disney Dream, Disney's 2027 deployment, The Maritime Executive and Cruise Industry News on the 2025–26 season. Ship assignments change every season, so I always check the current deployment for your dates.

A few notes:

  • Legend of the Seas is the big one. It's Royal Caribbean's third Icon-class ship and the largest ship ever to sail from Port Everglades. As a two-time Royal Caribbean Partner of the Year, I get asked about the Icon class constantly. If you're comparing lines, my Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival for families post is a good starting point.
  • Disney's plan shifts season to season. The Disney Dream is sailing from Port Everglades this winter before moving to San Juan in April 2027 and Port Canaveral for summer, and the Destiny sails from here in summer 2027. Disney's newest ship, the Disney Believe, is scheduled to sail from Fort Lauderdale starting in December 2027. My Disney Cruise Line family guide covers the ships.

Do I need to fly in the day before my cruise?

Yes. Fly in at least the day before. With an Allegiant route that only flies two days a week, that often means two or three nights in Fort Lauderdale before you sail. This is the one rule I don't bend.

Here's why it matters more from Rockford than from O'Hare. If your O'Hare flight is canceled, there's usually another flight that afternoon. If an Allegiant flight from RFD is canceled, the next scheduled flight may be three days later. The ship will not wait. Cruise lines are clear that if you miss embarkation, you're responsible for catching up at the next port, at your own cost.

So my approach:

  1. Arrive on a flight day before your sailing date. With a Thursday/Sunday pattern, that means a Thursday flight for a Friday, Saturday or Sunday sailing, or a Sunday flight for a Monday sailing.
  2. Treat the pre-cruise nights as vacation. A beach day before the ship is a good thing, not wasted time.
  3. Plan a night after the cruise, too. As of October 2026, the flights home leave Fort Lauderdale early in the morning (around 6:30 to 7:10 a.m.), long before you can get off a ship. So you can't fly home the day the cruise ends. Plan at least one hotel night after the ship docks, and line up the cruise's return day with the day before a flight.
  4. Buy travel insurance that covers missed connections and travel delays. This is exactly the trip it's for. My travel insurance guide explains what to look for.

If you're new to cruising, my first cruise tips for beginners covers embarkation day, what to pack in your carry-on and how the first afternoon on board works.

What does a Rockford–Fort Lauderdale fly-cruise trip look like?

The trick is to match a cruise's start and end days to Allegiant's flight days, so you don't spend extra hotel nights waiting for a plane home. With flights down on Thursday and Sunday mornings, and flights home early on those same mornings, two patterns fit well.

Plan A: Short cruise plus beach (7 nights total)

Day Plan
Sunday Fly RFD → FLL. Hotel near the beach or port.
Monday Board a 4-night cruise.
Tue–Thu At sea / Bahamas ports
Friday Return to port. Check into a beach hotel.
Saturday Beach day, water taxi or the science museum.
Sunday Early flight FLL → RFD.

Plan B: Week at sea plus beach (10 nights total)

Day Plan
Thursday Fly RFD → FLL. Check into a beach hotel.
Friday Board a 7-night Caribbean cruise.
Sat–Thu At sea / ports
Following Friday Return to port. Check into a beach hotel.
Saturday Beach day on Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Sunday Early flight FLL → RFD.

Not every ship sails on these days, and Allegiant's flight days and times can change by month, which changes the whole grid. If the cruise you want doesn't line up, the fallback is simple: add a night or two in Fort Lauderdale, or price O'Hare for just one direction. I do this matching for every fly-cruise I book from RFD.

Which Fort Lauderdale beaches are best for families?

For families, I like Fort Lauderdale Beach for convenience, Hollywood Beach for its car-free Broadwalk, and Deerfield Beach when you want something quieter. Here's how they compare:

Beach area What it's like Best for
Fort Lauderdale Beach (A1A) Wide beach, lifeguards, promenade with the wavy wall, lots of hotels across the street First-timers, cruise nights, walking to dinner
Las Olas Boulevard Not a beach itself, but a shopping and dining street that runs from downtown to the sand Evening strolls, ice cream, people-watching
Hollywood Beach Broadwalk About 2.5 miles of beachfront promenade with no cars, just bikes, walkers and casual restaurants (American Planning Association) Families with strollers, kids who bolt, bike rentals
Deerfield Beach Smaller and calmer, with a fishing pier Quieter days, grandparents, fewer crowds

Hollywood is about 15 to 20 minutes south of the airport and Deerfield about 30 to 35 minutes north without traffic, so all of them work with an FLL trip.

One thing I really like for autism families: Greater Fort Lauderdale has a sensory-friendly beach program with KultureCity covering Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pompano Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Dania Beach and Hallandale Beach. Designated lifeguard stations have sensory bags with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools and verbal cue cards, and more than 170 lifeguards have taken KultureCity's sensory-awareness training. The free KultureCity app has a social story for each participating beach (TravelPulse). Show your kids the social story on the flight down. It's a small step that can make the first beach day go much better.

What is there to do in Fort Lauderdale with kids?

The water taxi, the Museum of Discovery and Science, and an Everglades airboat ride are the three I suggest most, with a sensory warning on the airboat. All of them fit easily into a pre- or post-cruise day.

Water Taxi. Fort Lauderdale calls itself the "Venice of America" because of its canals, and the water taxi is the easiest way to see them. It runs daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with more than 30 stops across Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Pompano Beach. As of October 2026, an all-day pass is $38 for adults, $18 for kids ages 5 to 11, and free under 5 (Visit Lauderdale). Prices can change, so check before you go. You can hop off at Las Olas for lunch.

Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). A hands-on science museum downtown with an IMAX theater, open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. (MODS). It's a good choice for a hot afternoon or a rainy day. MODS holds a free Sensory-Friendly Sunday on the fourth Sunday of the month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: the museum opens two hours early, and the 12:30 p.m. IMAX film is shown with lights up and sound down. The remaining 2026 dates are October 25, November 22 and December 27 (MODS access programs).

Everglades airboat rides. Airboat parks west of the city, such as Sawgrass Recreation Park and Everglades Holiday Park, take you out into the sawgrass to look for alligators and birds. Kids love it. But please know this: airboats are extremely loud. The engine and fan sit right behind you. Ask the operator about ear protection when you book, and for a child who is sound-sensitive, bring your own over-ear headphones and a plan to step away. If the noise is a dealbreaker, a slower nature walk or a boardwalk park is a better fit.

Why is this trip a good fit for autism families?

A short nonstop from a small airport, plus a 10-minute ride to the ship, removes most of the hardest transitions of a cruise vacation. For many of the families I work with, the travel day is the part they dread most, not the trip itself.

Compare the two travel days:

From RFD to FLL From O'Hare to Orlando, then Port Canaveral
Drive to the airport Short, for most of the Stateline 75–90 minutes from Rockford, plus traffic
Airport size Small, one security line, short walks One of the busiest airports in the country
Flight About 3 hours nonstop About 2.5 hours, sometimes with a connection
Airport to ship About 10 minutes About an hour

RFD's smaller scale means fewer people, less noise and less waiting. Then you land, get your bags and you're at your hotel or the port in minutes.

A few other things I build into these trips:

I'm a mom of two kids on the spectrum, and I wrote about how we plan differently in Traveling with two kids on the spectrum. The less time a trip spends in transit, the more energy everyone has for the fun part.

How I help

I'm a travel advisor based in Rockford, and I plan trips for families across Rockford, Belvidere, Freeport, DeKalb and Beloit. A Fort Lauderdale fly-cruise has more moving pieces than it looks like, and that's where I'm useful.

  • I match the cruise to the flight days, so you aren't stuck with an extra hotel night or a missed ship.
  • I compare RFD with O'Hare for your dates, including bags, parking and transfers, and tell you honestly which one wins.
  • I pick the ship and cabin for your family. As a two-time Royal Caribbean Partner of the Year, I know the Royal Caribbean fleet well, and I book Disney, Celebrity, Princess and others too.
  • I plan for sensory needs. I'm an IBCCES Certified Autism Travel Professional, so I handle the details other people skip, like TSA Cares, cruise line disability forms, quiet cabin locations and social stories. See my autism travel planning page.
  • I handle the pre-cruise hotel, transfers and insurance, so it's all in one plan.

My planning is free to you, because cruise lines and hotels pay me. Learn more about my Caribbean cruise planning and family vacation planning.

Frequently asked questions

What days does Allegiant fly from Rockford to Fort Lauderdale?

As of October 2026, the schedule shows Thursdays and Sundays, departing RFD mid-morning, with flights home leaving Fort Lauderdale early on those same mornings. Days can change by month, so confirm your dates on allegiantair.com before planning around them.

How long is the flight from Rockford to Fort Lauderdale?

About 3 hours nonstop. Fort Lauderdale is an hour ahead of Rockford, so you'll land about 4 hours later on the clock.

Can I fly into Fort Lauderdale on the same day my cruise leaves?

I don't recommend it, and from RFD I won't plan it. With only two flights a week, one delay can mean missing the ship. Fly in at least the day before.

How do I get from Fort Lauderdale airport to the cruise port?

Take a taxi or rideshare. It's usually about 10 minutes, and the port lists the average taxi fare at $18 to $21. Many cruise bookings can also add a transfer.

Is Fort Lauderdale good for a family beach vacation without a cruise?

Yes. Fort Lauderdale Beach, the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk and Deerfield Beach are all family-friendly, and several Broward beaches have KultureCity sensory bags and trained lifeguards.

Can I cruise from Miami if I fly into Fort Lauderdale?

Yes. PortMiami is about 25 miles south, roughly 35 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic, and it has ships Port Everglades doesn't. Flying RFD–FLL and driving down can still beat connecting through O'Hare. Allow at least an hour and still arrive the day before.
